WHY is the Coral Bay webcam at Hurricane Hole?

Probably because they were expecting a lot of activity because of Hurricane Dean. It looks like the VI isn't too worried about this storm as it seems only one boat is in there!

Hurricane Hole is said by many to be one of the safest places in that part of the islands to keep your vessel during a major storm. There were quite a few boats moored there, more or less permanently until 2003. The park service forced them all out in spring 2003, and overnight the harbors in Coral Bay and Johnson Bay got dramatically more crowded. There is some system that the park service uses that allows temporary moorings in Hurricane Hole when very strong storms are imminent. Also, the park is trying to eliminate all permanent moorings in Johnson Bay.So, I think when there is a strong possibility of big storms, the web cam showing Hurricane Hole is informative.

Is this a pan and zoom of the regular CB Cam? It looks like they picked up and moved to another location.

There are more boats in Hurricane Hole (about 6 or 7 at 9am) but they are further around into the bay in the area we can't see on camera. The wind is picking up here but thankfully it looks like we will be safe.
We are all thinking and praying for teh islands in Dean's path.

I heard on the radio a little while ago that it passed Jamaica with 100 mile winds so not sure what damage it did.
I am thinking that Dean will do more damage to the Yucatan Penisula.
As Pia says thoughts and prayers for people in its path.

My thoughts and prayers with everyone as well. Unfortunately I have family vacationing in the Yucatan right now (mom and sister). Hopefully it will not strengthen - they area there until Tuesday!

Hey designbyroe,
I just checked on line and Dean is still 52 hours away from Jamaica so not sure what island is getting the wind but I know we are (not 100 miles per hour though) Dean is due to be approx 230 miles from STJ in 9 hours.
There is a great site on http://stormcarib.com/ and you can enter the island you are looking for and it wil tell you when it is due to arrive and how close it will come to that island (keeping in mind it can change direction at any moment) You go to Dean Tools and click on "closest point"

I have worn my anti-hurricane hook bracelet since the day I got it over 3 years ago. Before I put it on, I took it out to the water and baptised it in the Caribbean. I promised to keep it on as long as STJ was never hit. I NEVER take it off. So far, so good
