Latest on Tropical Storm Dean

The 5 PM EST runs from the NHC have Dean headed further south than earlier - in a path to hit the DR. Not like it can't change again - but at the moment, things looking a lot better for the VI and PR than they did this morning. Image <a href="

No offense but I am hoping it will take a QUICK northerly route and totally miss the VIs and the rest of the Caribbean to their east (and far enough away not to do any damage).
I want Dean to stay the heck away from the Gulf - not ready to deal with another storm around here (emotionally more than anything). We just heard on the news that there is a tropical wave building in the Gulf now that will supposedly head towards Texas. I pray for EVERYONE in hurricane related areas that we are all spared this season.
Glad to hear it's looking good for those of you in the VIs though.

Three days to go in my "count down" and watching the weather reports obsessively. Hard to make sense out of all the "models". Would appreciate some info from "boots on the ground". What's the sense from the locals, Pia... Ruth...? Thinking of you and hope all will be safe!

Sooooo hard to figure it out - we are all logged on permanently (at least I am) to all the storm sites.
But anyway, right now it looks like it will be South of us so just rain which is a good thing 
........ but, another thing to remember is the fact that Dean is almost on the same path that Marilyn was on in 1995 and we all know how devastating that was to the VI's as she turned for a direct hit !!!! I watched a "local" video last night on Marilyn - it was a friend who, for some reason, taped the Weather Channel's hurricane reports and it was amazing how ALL the storm/weather reporters were saying Marilyn would be South and a minimal storm.....boy they were sooooo wrong. The video also was shot on STJ after Marilyn passed - amazing and emotional is all you can say.
We are all praying we have a quiet hurricane season (read non existant) but I did buy alittle extra water, batteries, canned food, dog food and, of course, liquor 
yesterday - just in case, but no one here is panicking - it's just business as usual but alittle more "aware" is the best I can say.
All we can do right now is watch, wait and pray for a good outcome.....Ruth your thoughts.

It has been a few years since I was glued to the weather channel but I think you have it right, Pia.
All you can do is watch and wait. There are so many variables that can completely change the forecast and you really just have to be prepared but not panic. A storm can turn on a dime and it can fizzle out just as quickly.
When you live in the VI, you learn to understand shear and milibars and what it all means. I wish I could remember it all.
I would plan on getting on that plane and having a bit of rain. That is really all you can do. It is the risk you take when visiting during the hurricane season.

You are both very helpful. Im not concerned about the fact that the weather could be rainy during our week on St. John,... our group.. which has not been together for a year can pass alot of time just catching up and laughing (read imbibing). Its just a vacation for us and if we had to cancel we will have more. Hearing from folks who don't have that luxury, and will ride out whatever comes their way puts it all in perspective.
What is it Mom always said. Hope for the best, plan for the worst. Hopefully we will all be enjoying a drink watching a sunset Sunday night at the beach bar.
