Tom,
We were there last September, going this Sept. and looking at villas for Sept. 2008. We are staying at Peace & Plenty this year, I'm looking at villas closer to Cruz Bay for 2008.
You are right...several places are closed, but enough stay opened....offering a variety of options.
The weather is extremely hot and humid. Central air in a villa would be great!
The beaches are empty....no lack of shade trees.
Restaurants...reservations not needed.
Lower rates...even lower than off season.
Laid back and limin' island feel.
Did I mention the deserted beaches?
If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them if I can....mia

Tom-
I was on-island once in September and stayed at Gallows Point (Sept. special) and it was a very laid back. There were quite a few restaurants closed but I liked the fact that there was always space at a Woody's table and at the beach bar and we had the beaches pretty much to ourselves, even Hawksnest & Trunk. It seemed to me to be more humid than hot. I went the year prior in August and it was HOTTT! It was like 15 years ago before alot of people found it and it was more laid back and alot less busy in town during the day. I went diving and there was only 5 people on the boat. Good luck I think you will love it.

I would look for ac and have a blast!! I think each month has it's positives and some slight negatives. In the winter you have the swells on the north shore, in the summer and fall you have the heat and humidity and possible hurricanes. But the water is warmer in the summer and fall and you can snorkel forever and not get cold.
You're a great cook, so I'm sure you will not miss the few restaurants that are closed.
There is not a BAD month to be on STJ!!
