Hi all,
Has anyone gone to St. John a day earlier and stayed 1 night in either St. John or St. Thomas or can anyone recommend a hotel or B&B for a one night stay during high season (Feb08)?

We've stayed for a night at the Green Iguana on St. Thomas on several occasions. It's clean, inexpensive, and the owners are nice folks. http://www.thegreeniguana.com/

We did this a few years ago. Stayed at the Holiday Inn. It has a video Casino, they added drink tickets and we were right down the steet from the ferry.

Things you might want to think about that we didnt.

If you have much luggage this is one more time you must deal with it. You also have to pay for a cab to take it to the ferry for you. Extra cost we didnt think of.
For one night you are sleeping out of your luggage. So keep one days worth of clothes and toiletries close.

We stayed at Emerald Beach right by the airport last trip. Will probably stay there again. It's convenient.

We just did one night at the end of our trip and stayed at Secret Harbour. We really enjoyed it. Right on the ocean and very close to the Red Hook ferry - you will still need a car or taxi. I have also stayed one night at the Green Iguana and found it nice as well - the owners were very helpful and it is within walking distance to the ferry, shops and restaurants (although down quite a few steps!)

Next time, we will rent a car on St. Thomas to save on all the taxi costs and to keep from schlepping so much luggage.

I've heard very good reviews from Crystal Palace as well - will have to try them next time!

We've stayed at all 3 of the places mentioned, for one or two nights before/after. Recommend the green iguana for the rooms-most have microwave/fridge/toaster, some have complete kitchens if you needed, can walk down hill to the main shopping area (uphill is a bit tougher), recommend the crystal palace for the "ambiance" since it's a funky older building, and recommend holiday inn for the walking closeness to downtown. We have done it three of our four trips and have stayed at the Charlotte Amalie Holiday Inn two of the three times. It was the most convenient and you can walk to Frenchtown for dinner even if you get in late.

This last time we stayed at the Mafolie Hotel - http://mafolie.com/ - will have to do a review. Cat would be a better person to tell you about this hotel as they got into STT in the middle of the day and we didn't get to the hotel till about 8:30. It was nice enough for a one night stay and the restaurant had a GREAT view - just a tad bit dissapointed that it did not stay open late enough for us to eat when they said they would be open till 10pm, but hey we got to eat at Sib's on the Mountain before it closed for good

Based on location alone, I would probably choose the Holiday Inn because it was so easy and close to the CA ferry (which wasn't running at the time) but it was alot more expensive.

You might want to look at Secret Harbour Beach Resort. It's on STT - out by Red Hook.

I booked the Crystal Palace for a couple of nights on STT prior to our Sat. arrival on STJ in Feb solely on the recommendations of this travel forum. We wanted to get in a few days of shopping (girls) and golfing (guys) without sacrificing any of our precious days on the STJ beaches. I'm confident we'll enjoy our stay.
