St. Thomas car rental and car barges

We are renting a jeep from Dependable on St. Thomas on 7/27 and traveling over to St. John on 7/28. I read somewhere that one of the barges will not let you take a rental from St. Thomas over. Does that make sense? If anyone has experience with the car barges we'd appreciate a few tips.

Thanks!

We rented from Dependable in May and took the car ferry to St John. They just wave you on and point where they want you to park. No worries! You do have to pass by a both and pay $3.00 to the Port Authority (I think that's what it was) and then pay on board for the ferry. It was our first time and very simple.

Hi Beachluvers,
We just got back last night and we rented from Budget. The Port Authority still charges $3.00 to get on the dock and depending of which ferry, it is either $26.00 or $27.00 for a one way ticket. (one way is best, because if you buy round-trip, you have to wait for the ferry you came over on)

No issue with taken rental cars on the car barge. We just took our Dependable rental back over from STJ to STT yesterday and are sitting in San Juan waiting for our connection back home. Have a great trip.

The car ferries have no problem at all with allowing rental cars on the ferry. The issue is that some of the rental companies do not allow their rental cars to be taken over to STJ. Hertz does not allow it.

I appreciare everyone's response. I'd seen a posting on another forum that Boyson does not allow St. Thomas rental cars on his barge. It sounded lame, just thought I'd check with the experts.
