From on St. John....At least they fed someone and weren't killed just because they were sharks.

The Cruz Bay waters are safe again, and it had nothing to do with Sheriff Brody. Two of the three black tip sharks that have been entertaining some and freaking out others have been plucked from the water in the prime of their adolescence. One by a guy with a fishing poll who reeled it in and took it home for dinner. A second grabbed from the water by another fisherman who preferred the more straight-forward approach of a gaff hook.

Shark number three has apparently high-tailed it out of Cruz Bay. Kind of sad, isn't it?

That's so sad!
I won't tell my son. He got kind of fond of them while we were there.

This is so sad....and why our world is in trouble. There is enough room for all of us....big, small and with gills.

I wonder what kind of questions they asked the shark in their Fishing Poll that got them hooked?

And yes, it is very very sad......I'm glad I was able to enjoy them while i was there. Too bad no one else will get that chance now....

Hey,Who did the funny shark pics chasing two people on a kyack?I sure could use a good laugh right now. I hope that I can see a shark when I visit in 18 days.I myself would much rather see a shark in the water than on a platter with a side order of fries! Parafins......

Man, that is very sad. We had a lot of fun playing with those sharks one night and hate to hear of their demise :(

You know, I saw this thread the other day when it was started, but it just hit me. When I was down there in '04, we took a fishing charter with our friends who had used the same charter previously. While we were catching tuna, the sharks kept plucking them right off the lines...there were so many out there. I remember the Captain of our boat telling us that the waters (obviously we were way out in the ocean, away from any beaches - for those not so fond of swimming among sharks) were so full of the sharks because they are protected in the USVI!!!! Anyone else every hear this? Sam, do you remember this?

At any rate, I see no reason to pluck the young sharks from their natural habitat. The shark population is dwindling as it is and if they become completely extinct...the human race won't be far behind!!

What a shame. I wonder if they even tasted very good.

As far as fishing being legal, I have read that it is not legal from the National Park Beaches. However, I have seen people fishing at Maho, and this past trip there was a guy staying at Caneel that was always walking around with his fishing rod. I never actually saw him use it, but he carried it everywhere!

As I said yesterday this makes me very sad. Of course people have to eat. But to gaff a young shark is just sick. We'll be down in a week and I am sorry we wont see the little guys
