Wayward Sailor or White Wing

We will be arriving on St. John in a week and a half and are so excited. We are thinking of doing a USVI daysail and were wondering if we should go with Wayward Sailor or White Wing. Does anyone know which goes to the best snorkeling spots? We have done a lot of snorkeling around St. John but are wanting to try some different places that are only accessible by boat. Should we make reservations before we go or just wait until we get there?

I would appreciate any input. Thanks!

I believe that White Wing is gone for the season, but I could be wrong. Do a quick search and you will find tons of posts on both boats.

Cpt. Clark (White Wing) told us he was pulling out at the end of June.

I believe Captain Phil pulls Wayward Sailor for maintenance, also.

Try Rick & Robin Gallup on Long Distance. They don't like to go to the BVI (they feel it takes too much time going through customs and all) but they are absolutely the best, hands down, for a USVI sailing trip, taking you to nice little coves & great snorkeling. They are just terrific & kind & interesting people.

Robin is great at snorkeling with you & diving down to show you a flounder or some such that you would absolutely miss on your own (holding you by the hand & helping you free dive if necessary).

Really a great time.

Wow. Clark is out, Phil is out, and rick and Robin are also gone til Oct.!

I just did a day sail with Gypsy Spirit. Great snorkeling. Little ST. James and Lovango. Saw a spotted eagle ray as soon as I jumped in the water. nice sailing too. You can book him thru Connections..or his websitehttp://www.handsonsailing.com/
He has lots of stories and knowledge...he's been daysailing here for 22 years.

I don't believe Captain Phil does maintenance until Sept/Oct. We spent a day with him week before last and it was really, really enjoyable. Snorkeled west side of Lovongo and Henley Cay.
Contact him via his website to find out his schedule. He's very prompt in returning e-mails.
We didn't schedule before getting on STJ. Just called early in the week and asked what he had available. We had a great day with him and highly recommend him. Hopefully he'll be available when you're there.

You may also want to check out Flyaway Charters. We went to the BVI's with Captain Stan in May. Captain Truman is great too. Their boats are very nice ... leave from Coral Bay. I don't know where you are staying, but that was convenient for us. I highly recommend them.

We really enjoyed our sail with Captain Phil. Just FYI though, depending on where you are thinking you want to go, he told us that he is not sailing to Jost Van Dyke anymore. He used to have a day sail over there but he recently decided he did not want to offer it any more.

That's interesting. Maybe that's why we had a less than fun time with him. I see lots of raves on how great he is but maybe if he wasn't really enjoying that destination, that could explain it. I don't know maybe we just had an off day.

Still, those damn cookies on Jost were worth the fee alone!

We took a daysail with Captain Jason on Cloud Nine in May, and it was awesome. You can contact him at cloud9sailingadventure.com, or thru Connections ask for Cloud9. Have a great time!
