"Poles rescued after cut-price yacht loses mast in Atlantic

TWO Polish men were rescued off the south-east coast after their ebay-bought boat left them adrift in the Atlantic.

The men were safe in Waterford after they were left mastless aboard the yacht they bought on the website for $15,000. They picked up the vessel in the Virgin Islands two weeks ago, then sailed across the Atlantic with the intention of reaching Poland and re-selling the yacht for up to four times what they paid.

However, when they lost their mast, their emergency equipment also failed. A fishing vessel which passed near them did not respond to their signal for help and it was not until the Waterford lifeboat service was alerted that they were rescued.

The men, who were in good health despite their ordeal, intend to resume their trip to Poland."

I wish there were more details - US or British islands - and the name of the boat.

Dang!! That would be my luck for sure! I am glad the two men are safe and out of harms way. Better luck for them the next time.

So I wonder, how does one repair a ship with this type of damage, or does one repair it?

A cautionary tale. We bought a 1978 Chrysler 22 in 2005 on ebay for $600. I think we got very lucky but we would never have considered anything other than a day sail until we really knew the boat.
