In another thread Puddlejumper mentioned a sailing school out of St Thomas, does anyone have any personal experience with a sailing school in the VI's?
This could be our spring trip, since we've always wanted to bareboat, but we're uneducated and this looks like a great opportunity to learn.
We talk about how we would love to spend a two-week vacation with one week bareboating and the other in a villa.

patr, I noticed that reference to the sailing school and bookmarked it (
http://www.fairwindsailing.com/virgin_islands.html) for my husband to take a look at, since we've been discussing getting our boater's certification. I think at this point my husband has narrowed it down to a couple of choices, but I don't believe Fair Wind Sailing is one that he's checked out yet. Hopefully some of our forum friends can lead us in the right direction. Thanks for starting this thread. Ali~

Patr,
I noticed your post. I am trying to get in touch with one of Capt. Dave's students I met recently in the Abacos. This student thought enough of Dave to go on a ~1000NM voyage with Dave, so I figure he can give you a great deal of info. This person also took all of the ASA courses in Red Hook. I will let you know when or if I make contact.
BASUR,
If I could redo my ASA class, I would do the course in Red Hook. What a great vacation would be! I did take my ASA class from East Carolina Sailing School here where I live in NC. I liked it so much I moved onto my boat in the marina where the school is. There is a great B & B right across the street from it too to stay in if you decide take any courses.

It is a very laid back atmosphere. Not stuffy at all. Brad will make sure the two of you learn the ropes.
Hope I was some help!
Good luck!

I'd check out Offshore Sailing School in Tortola. Offshore is based in Newport,
R.I.in summer and Tortola in the winter.
I took a week-lomg liveaboard course with them a few years back out of Newport. We worked hard, but learned so much. They offer certificate programs that ennable you to bareboat charter with Moorings or Sunsail, once you've learned sailing fundamentals.
Good luck and fair winds,
Captain Vic
