Passport Question

My wife and I are scheduled to fly out of Charlotte for St. John 2 weeks from today. We both sent in our information to get a passport at the beginning of March. I received mine about 3 weeks ago, but she has not gotten her's yet. She is trying to call the number they say to call if you are traveling within 14 days but cannot get through. My question is do you need to have your original birth certificate to fly to the USVI's? We traveled to St. John last year but I can't remember if we needed the original birth certificates or not. We are scheduled for a day sail with Captain Phil to the BVI's and he told me we would need a passport, but upon looking into it we would only need a driver's license and the original birth certificate since we are traveling by water. Our big problem now is that she doesn't have a passport or her birth certificate. We really want to go on the day sail, but as long as we can get to St. John we will be happy. I told my wife to call and tell government that she wanted her birth certificate back along with the money we paid and interest. I am sure that won't happen, but if I owed them money they would definitely make me pay interest. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and God bless.

She can always expedite a new original birth certificate. You can usually get those within a week.

Our family of 5 applied for passports in mid-March. Three of us appeared on the tracking site about a month ago, including my wife. I don't know where the other two are.

Problem is, my wife was born in a military hospital in Germany and has a birth certificate issued by the State Dept. We sent the original in with her passport app but made a copy albeit without the seal.

Gettng through on the passport phone line is difficult and the people working there don't know anything except it is in process. They don't have internet access. It is a joke.

After much anxiety, I contacted my congressman for help on 5/14 and they were able to get her passport on expedited status. I spoke with his office yesterday and was told the passport would be sent via overnight mail. We leave on Friday.

I think she will be able to leave the country but my concern is will a driver's license, marriage certificate, and copy of her state dept. issued birth certificate be sufficient to get back in the country.

Is there a real possibility she won't be allowed to reenter the US? Guess I will have an answer to that on June 9.

JP-If you are just talking about getting from the USVI back into the states she'll likely be fine. We just returned on May 6th and only had our birth certificates and driver's license.
The people in front of us in customs didn't have their original birth cert and they let them through no problem!

Good luck!

Just worried about inconsistency in interpreting the rules. Thanks for your response.
