snorkel vest question

Hi everyone,

I think I'm going to purchase a snorkel vest for my 12 year old son. He's an "OK" swimmer, but not a super strong swimmer. I was thinking it might be good for him to have while swimming out to snorkel around Waterlemon Cay, etc.

Does anyone know if the adult sized snorkel vests can be cinched up quite a bit to fit a 12 year old? If we buy a child size one, it will be a one-time purchase, I'm pretty sure.

My husband and I, as well as our 16 year old daughter, won't require one.

My son weighs around 86-88 lbs.... so he's not super big... just hoping the adult size will be suitable.

Maybe he doesn't even need one? He's snorkeled a number of times in the ocean from boats... he just hasn't swam very far from shore / boat while snorkeling.

Thanks for your help!

Carole

I got one for my husband from Amazon.com. I think it was around $25. They had lots of sizes available. Luckilly my 14 yr old son and I can also wear that one if we need to. I think it's worth it.

Carole, when in doubt, buy one or rent one - just in case

My husband & I use them. While I am a very good swimmer (thanks to years of day camp  ),I am 4'11" and under 90 pounds - I just feel safer with one. Husband is 5'11" & 168 lbs - and a pretty good swimmer as well, but for us, it is so much more relaxing with no worries. Our 19 year old son is a rc certified lifeguard - and as you might guess, does not feel the need to use one.

As for size, I forget what we use.... hubby bought one last time we were in St. John, I just rent it when I get there - along with the mask & snorkel.

ENJOY!

Thanks ksea and Lisa. I appreciate the information!

Lisa, you're about the size of my son... I assume you wear an adult size snorkel vest? If that's the case, I'm sure he could most likely wear an adult size too.
