Okay, so the title of this thread is a bit of a stretch but .........
We just returned last night from 10 days in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington. We left Indiana and temperatures in the 90's and humidity that would fill the great lakes! The temp in Washington was the mid-70''s and it was just wonderful. We sat on the deck of the house and watched seals, dolphins and Orca whales swim by. It was truly a grand vacation. And now before the forum police scream off topic!!! We spent much of the time overlooking the water in the San Juan's discussing our need to return to STJ. So, we put that vacation time to good use emailing Lisa at VacationVistas and booking our next return to trip to Wings Over Water on St. John. If you have never stayed at this villa it is well worth your consideration. Great for 2 Couples. For us being directly on the water is important as the sounds of the waves crashing the shore are just so relaxing. Wings Over Water fills that bill. It is in a wonderful location and totally private and we can't wait to get back again. We've been to StJ many times and have stayed in many wonderful Villas but Wings is something special. Very difficult to book as it fills up quickly. We don't return to STJ until April but I'm pumped already and will live the dream through the trip reports of other forumites until then. Keep those trip reports coming!

The San Juan Islands are delightful - not too many folks have heard about them. Been a long time since we've been, but a return the to Pacific Northwest has been moved up in the travel queue. The seafood, the wine, the scenery, the great summer weather, the ferries, the areas of undeveloped coastline, the human sized cities...

How about sharing a few more details about your trip?

I've decided it's the water that we enjoy at stj or any island, beach, lake, water destination. stj has some of the prettiest water and beaches & water vistas I've encountered, BUT 90% or more of our trips involve water locations and stj is only a small but regular part. there is something soothing about water views. sure stj seems to have it all, to me, the best of the best, but fl gulf, Mexican gulf, lake Michigan, Jamestown/Newport/cape, maine coast and I'm sure many others will offer enough of the things we like about stj, that they are good, enjoyable change of pace. some really great alternatives can be cheaper, especially getting there. our latest was entire family for week in Jamestown ri on conanicut island with constant water views everywhere we went and all that Newport ri has to offer is only a short water shuttle ride away. like stj I could go right back if I could afford!
