To Maine in six weeks!

Post by jdw »

We are taking our first trip to Maine at the end of July. We are staying three nights in Bar Harbor, one night in Camden and then ending the week with three nights in Portland.

Please share your favorite restaurants and your favorite things to do. We really want to take a sightseeing cruise or maybe a sunset cruise. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Ahhh, love Bar Harbor! Definitely get out onto the nat'l park trails for a walk or bike ride -- there's a wide range of difficulty levels, so you can find something that's perfect for you. Driving the Acadia Loop Road is highly recommended as well.

For a sunset cruise, definitely the Margaret Todd:

Also, Bar Harbor can get chilly even at the height of summer, especially at night -- definitely plan to layer so that you're ready for cooler temps if necessary! Think roughly 80 during the day, 60ish at night....

A fellow forum member's blog post about her trip to Bar Harbor - http://vicki-h.travellerspoint.com/18/

We did a whale watching tour many years back it and really enjoyed it. It can get downright cold on the water so take appropriate clothing. It was high 90s (massive heat wave) on land and we were shivering in our pants and windbreakers once we got off shore.

We loved Maine. Highly recommend getting up at 4:15 am and heading up to Cadillac mountain for the sunrise. One of the most amazing things we've ever seen. Buy a good guide book for Acadia and do everything you can! Bring comfortable walking/hiking shoes and as has been mentioned earlier, bring warmer clothes as it can get chilly/cold. Layers are best. We did the whale watching thing, too. A great deal of fun. Once in a lifetime is enough, though.

We enjoyed Portland, as well. Cute town, interesting shops/neighborhoods. Three nights might be a bit much there though.

Missing St. John. As always.

Thanks everyone!

PA Girl - Vicki and I exchanged emails a while back after I read her Maine trip report. She answered several questions for me and was very helpful. We are actually staying at two of the same places she did :D
