Airfare $$ higher or lower 30 days out ?

We have our airfare for our June trip but I am trying to get my parents to fly out June 20th or 21st and join us. Any advice you can give would be appreciated!
Has anyone had experience purchasing airfare at the last minute with US Air or Delta? Will the cost go up or down the closer to the dates?
Thank you for any advice you can offer!
Jo

In my humble flying experience, I have always seen the trend of it going upward, especially with USAir, I have never flown Delta, but I was watching airfare on American for August and it has risen 40%! Yikes! Good luck with your plans

Yep, goes up over time. We get best price three to five months out. I just paid over $700 for a ticket on short notice, or my rewards card did. I'm ready to book September and January as soon as I get the okay from Sweet Christine on schedule. I'll book August 2015 300 days out when the frequent flyer tickets open up; I do those as one-way tickets so that I can book each direction as the frequent flyer tickets become available.

Thank you Myheart'sinSTJ and RickG ~ I kind of figured rates would be higher.

Personally, I don't have the patience to wait until so close to trip time to purchase airfare! I bought in January...paid higher than last year but much lower than what the cost is now. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like my parents are going to join us...it is wishful thinking on my part.

So Sorry Jo...that your parents can't come .

Our kids and grandkids aren't getting to go with us as planned either.

Just going to be Tom and myself. But...maybe will run into you and get to say Hello this time ! We are staying at Grande Bay for the first time instead of a Villa. Have a great trip and I hope they get to go with you next time.

I run the +/- 3 days on Kayak and the matrix.itasoftware.com fare calendar and one-way fares by month to see options for best fares. Sometimes surprises pop up.
Even if the planes look completely full, the airlines hold back seats for their best full fare passengers - my AA flight to St. Thomas tomorrow opened up 10 seats 24 hours before departure. I waited for seat assignment and got a great aisle seat near the front of the plane. This works for me if I'm traveling alone and I'm flexible.
Cheers, RickG

Thanks for the tip RickG.
Hi Sherry!
We have more villa than what we need this year...it will be just me, my husband and our 2 teens. Our friends had to cancel so we tried to get my parents to join us but they have some health issues and just don't feel up to the travel.
We are staying with friends who recently moved to St. Thomas for 4 nights before heading to St. John on the 21st. It would be nice to say "hello" in person...maybe there will be a BB gathering that week!
Safe travels and best wishes for a fantastic trip!
Jo
