Thought I would check to see if there was any update on either repairs starting or further degradation with the road (I think it is Centerline) going into Coral Bay? Several weeks ago there was quite a bit of information on the Forum with pictures of orange caution barriers and a couple of pictures showing where one of the barriers had fallen off the side of the road.

We'll be on island in November, just wondering if there will be any improvement!

Yes I saw Larry's truck there yesterday - but he/they have been there probably 6 times (that I have seen) in the last few months. A contractor has been hired (as of August 4th 2013) and rumor has it that work is due to start in September of 2013 and be completed by March - they just didn't say what year :)

It's really not that bad. If I hadn't seen all those scary pictures of the road from underneath I wouldn't have thought twice about it. Just a very short stretch (like, 15 feet?) where the outer lane is blocked off with an orange barrier and vehicles have to take turns going through. The whole thing is now surrounded by speed bumps and blinking electric signs, so nobody is going to go spinning through there at high speed and cause a head-on collision. There's even a little wall of asphalt protecting the orange barricades now so people won't sideswipe them and send them over the edge.

Obviously it needs to be fixed, but as it is right now it doesn't seem especially scary or dangerous. And it's nowhere near as annoying as the never-ending orange-cone road repair zones currently impeding my daily commute here in Minnesota.

The wild card is the potential for torrential rains on one or more occasions during this current storm season, which could substantially aggravate the problem. The initial damage was caused by heavy rain from Hurricane Otto in 2010, and the current state of the road's undercutting occurred during a large rainstorm this May. Keep you fingers crossed....

All the best,

Kevin

There is no problem driving into Coral Bay . Ido it EVERYDAY to have lunch at Pickles and dinner at Oasis . These are great local restaurants , owned & directly operated by fabulous women who love to cook ! Don't miss these great places because of all the talk about needed road repairs. .
Coral Bay is OPEN FOR BUSINESS *

Please let tourists know that it isn't a major problem for them. Yes it needs to be addressed but all who live here drive by the hole and it hasn't been a problem to get by it. Yes it is a potential problem if not addressed. I understand that people are cancelling reservations because of the road. That is sad that they will miss out on our beautiful island because of it. It is not necessary to cancel your vacation.

The latest I have seen on the road repairs...

"Work will begin the first week in January on the section of Centerline Road near Coral Bay that is crumbling downhill, Government House said in a press release issued Wednesday. The job is expected to take nine months."

Quoted from St John Source this morning.

Public Works has been giving us various start dates for months. As they say here, "soon come".
