I know it's early, 7:15am to be exact, but we are leaving on Wed and last year we got our wine from Starfish, convenient, but not really great choices. Did not get to Mixology, but was wondering if there selection is better. Also where is it again?

After waiting a year, can't believe we are almost there!!!!!

Have a great time, Susan! As for wine I don't recall the selection being that great at Mixology. The location is in the Lumberyard (I think that's right). It is down the road from Chilly Billy's if that helps.
I think we got all our wine at Pine Peace.

Enjoy!

Thanks Marybeth,

Just seemed like Starfish had mostly Australian chards which I don't care for. Am I being fussy or what!
Where is Pine Peace?

I don't remember wine in Pine Peace but I went in looking for swim diapers...so who knows. I do recall that Dolphin had a decent selection of wine. This was in 05 though.

Susan, what do you like? I will stretch my memory of Pine Peace to see what I can remember. For sure I know we got Veuve Cliquot Champagne there for a great price and I also remember getting a Kundee Estates Chard there which I like. In the heat I tend to steer away from the reds but that's just me.

I would probably bring wine in a shipper box as checked luggage before I brought a cooler. That being said, Starfish has the biggest stock. Lily's in Coral Bay has some decent variety. Pine Peace is a stretch, but worth checking while you are in there for groceries and cheap rum. If you call Mixology and tell them what you want they can usually get it for you.

Cheers, RickG

I don't remember mixology having a great selection. I miss the wine store that used to be in that blue building on the road to Starfish. I wonder where their stock went when they closed?

Marina Market in Red Hook has a decent selection if you have time to stop in there before taking the ferry over to STJ.

We thought Lily's market was overpriced. I've never been to Pine Peace.

Kind of stupid wine-related question: can you pack a bottle of champagne in your checked bags, or will it explode? We are thinking about bringing down a special bottle, and have bubble wrap and shipper boxes. For some reason though, I have it in my head that champagne can't go in the cargo hold of a plane. Any thoughts?

Pack it! We do this routinely. Champagne is actually the safest bet as the bottles are extra thick and designed for high pressure. I would fill a 6-bottle shipper box and check it as luggage. We also routinely bring a ton of bottles back from Europe. We have gotten so efficient at packing that we do not have enought clothes for padding. We bring bubble wrap and tape in our carry-on suitcases for the bottles.

Cheers, Rick

I am a red wine drinker, and Starfish had a good variety of California, Merlot's and Cabs, I also bought a La Crema Chard that was nice at Starfish.

We found Mixology after our big shop at Starfish, Next trip I plan to order ahead from Mixology! They had good prices on soda, water, beer, hard liquor compared to Starfish. Make sure they check the expiration dates if you order juice or mixers.
Mixology also had some good wines, Sterling, Stags Leap, Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, etc. I would email or call http://www.mixologywarehouse.com/#selection and request your favorite wine though.
The convenience factor in that they deliver is huge for me! $100. for free delivery is very do-able if you are drinking good wines.

I placed an order with Mixology too. I haven't been in there yet, but they have been very nice to work with on the phone. Tell them what you are looking for and they will have suggestions. Have fun!

KYGIRL, I thought you were there already! I don't know anything about the wine purchasing preference, but I just wanted to let you know that we LOVE the camera! Everyone was right about seeing in the LCD screen in the sunshine, but I'd have that problem no matter what. The security of knowing you can take into the water is worth every penny.

Susan and Herb---I thought Mixology had a pretty good selection in stock. Also, while its probably too late to help you since you're leaving Wednesday, Gary Moses (the Mixology owner) ordered some wine for us that he didn't normally stock---nothing extravagant---Cambria Pinot Noir (one of the favorites of a couple in our group). Plus it was delivered to our house. Pretty good service I'd say!
