Saw an article on-line in Tradewinds (see link below) about protecting yourself from Dengue Fever. Just remember the side effects for when you leave...mainland doctors will have a hard time diagnosing you unless you tell them you were recently in the Caribbean. I recall a few years back on the forum someone came down with Dengue months after their trip.

Tina - yeah all of the mosquito reports have made me nervous for everyone down there. I recently mentioned in a post that while we were down there two years ago, a local said that after some hurricane, the mosquitos were so bad that tons of people including himself on the island ended up with Dengue Fever.

He said it was HORRIBLE. He said every single part of his body ached so bad that he could barely move.

Lets hope no one encounters this or West Nile Virus for that matter.

I had Dengue fever and it is not something that I would wish on anyone. I laid in bed with a ridiculously high fever for days and every inch of my body ached. It was horrible.
Wear bug spray, you do not want to take a chance.

My aunt flew home from STJ with Dengue Fever and felt so horrible when she landed that she went right to the hospital. The doctors had NO IDEA what she had.

Luckily, I read about it ON THE FORUM! I passed along my suspicions to my uncle, he insisted she be tested for it and low-and-behold, it was Dengue Fever.

Another life saved by THE FORUM!

Oh my goodness. I cant believe I just read this. I got home early Sunday morning and was fine. Then, Sunday evening it started with a headache and my whole body ached and I have been running fever. ( My throat was scratchy but I think that was just allergies. I have this problem alot.) I was in bed all day yesterday didnt even pick up kids from school. I am up now because I have been in the bed running fever since Sunday evening and cant sleep. I started a Zpack yesterday morning but didn't go to the doctor. I am not running a temp at the moment but was at midnight and took advil. Island girl how did they treat you? I haven't eaten since Sunday evening Mothers Day dinner. I feel certain this is what I have.

Do you think in August it will be as bad as now as for mosquitos?

No I don't. I usually don't have any trouble. They had such a drought and then 9 inches of rain in the last few weeks. I havent been there in Aug. Only Feb may times, 1 Nov, 1 July , and 1 May. This was by far the worse time with November following that. I dont know if it is just me or if the bugs are just always bad where we live so I am use to it. We were on Francis one day and the bugs were fine, then it started to rain and we couldnt get our of there fast enough! yikes, they were everywhere. I think this was very unusually in unless you just whelp up normally really bad.

I just read this article on the ST. John Source site... "breathing mosquitos in through your nose"?

I have to admit, as a STJ veteran I thought people on the board were exaggerating. We've always encountered skeeters on our spring trips. Just goes with the territory. My apologies to you all for thinking this. What a pain!
