"You know there is nothing to do on St. John"

This was said to me today at church while discussing our upcoming anniversary trip with some friends today at church. I just sort of smiled and said that we will be as busy as we want to be. I then pointed out that we love to snorkel, are planning on renting a dinghy for a day, taking a day sail to JVD, hoping to explore some trails and maybe walking the dogs at the shelter.

They've been to St. John on a day trip from a cruise ship and travel extensively. I know St. John is not for everyone, but hopefully it is for us. I've also only been there on a day trip from a cruise ship, but found it to be the most beautiful place I have ever seen. This will be our first extended stay and I'm looking forward to having nothing to do. :D

You'll have a fabulous extended stay!
We've found in four visits that there is so much to do and explore that we actually have to force ourselves to take some down time so it's an actual vacation.
We've always headed home after a week or more with a long list of things to see & do on our next visit.
Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Have a lovely anniversary trip!! :D

We've been here a week already, and have a few days to go. We've done so much in the past week that we're taking the day off today. Even with another 3 days I know that we will be leaving with things left undone. I plan to do those when we return next year. Now to just plan the next trip.... :)

I am perfectly content with the masses thinking there is nothing to do on STJ...the more crowded it gets, the worse it gets (ie, cigarette butts on the beaches have gotten a lot worse over the past few years).

Please agree with them, it's a very boring island with nothing to do.
We don't want them on that island anyway if they can't see it's beauty.

You'll love your extended stay on St. John..... you'll realize that even after your fourth or fifth trip there that you still won't have done everything you want to do and read about on this forum.

Plus, even if you think you HAVE done everything you want to do, then you will want to share it with everyone else in your life and you'll get to see it all over again for the first time through their eyes. I can't wait for my family to see this island I love!!! This December will be a brand new treat all over again! :)

With nothing to do there...we sure are tired at the end of every day !
And it seems that no matter how hard we try to do all the things we plan to do...we just can't get it all in, guess that is why I am already planning for next years trip and we haven't even arrived for this year's trip yet !
But please tell them....You're right There's nothing TO DO....except enjoy the most beautiful Island and beaches and wildlife and flowers....... No forget what I just said....Don't tell them that !!

It just makes me smile when I read all these comments and realize that we only have 7 more weeks left. No one can consider her to be not genuine, but she could maybe use a little tact. After I proudly showed her the photo below from the place we are staying, all she could say was "who is going to sit in the other four chairs if it is just the two of you?".

edit: not sure how to post the photo. Sorry.

Tell them there must be someone else who will be looking for something to do.

Yeah, no casinos, no bingo, no shows, no kids clubs, no excursions. What do we do all day in STJ??
To each his own. STJ is more of a DIY vacation and that is not for everyone. Those empty chairs signify exactly what I am looking for: peace and quiet and not having to battle for a lounge chair at a crowded beach or pool.

I love your comment to your friend about being as busy as you want to be...some folks love nothing more than to be on the go...in life and on vacation...some of us like to sit back and take it all in...the whole point in a vacation is to relax...thank goodness we don't all see it that way...

I have a Crucian friend (hope I spelled it right) that moved to PA from St. Croix, with her two children, about 8 years ago. She just shakes her head at us when we talk about going to STJ because, as she puts it, "there isn't anything on STJ, go to St. Croix." She truly can't understand why we like STJ so much.

One of the things I am looking forward to the most is just sitting on the deck overlooking Coral Harbor with BVI in the distance. I don't know how much better it can get than that. Having the company of a good friend or spouse to enjoy it with is a bonus. I like not having a set schedule and doing what we want, when we want. I love the thought of just exploring the island in a jeep, finding a secluded beach and just chilling for the day.

Our idea of a big night out is a nice dinner with a couple of drinks and a local musician playing in the background. Any recommendations for that?
