First time staying on Coral Bay side

I'm trying to figure out our arrival day for November, and wondering if someone who's stayed in the area could tell me if this would be feasible:

Flight lands at 4:15, carry on only, and renting with Amalie. Do you think we could pick up a bunch of sodas from Cost U Less, pick up Candi's ribs (we'd call from the ferry) and make it up Calabash Boom before it gets dark? It'll be Blaine's first time driving up Calabash Boom, so we really want to be in before dark.

Thanks, forum!

where are you staying? it really isn't too bad getting up there-- but you will be really squeezing it tight if your flight lands at 4:15........

Sun, Moon and Stars. It's way up there - I think there's only one place higher.

Hi Minde,

I'd say it's pretty unlikely -- sunset is around 5:45 in November, so you'd have to get it all done (including the car barge and a 20+ minute drive out to Coral Bay) in an hour and a half.

Will you be following a villa greeter? That always makes things easier...

Nope and hate to break it to you but you will be in the dark anyway without stopping.

If you land at 4:15pm by the time you have taxied to the "gate" and unloaded it will be 4:30pm in your car and on your way by 5pm, arrive in Red Hook by 5:45pm (allow for traffic) so 6pm car ferry, arrive STJ 6:40pm and it will already be dark in November by 6:45pm.

If you do decide to stop at CUL you will be tight on time - don't want to miss the last car ferry and personally I would never plan on that last one if I had an option as sometimes (very rarely but it does happen) they are full and they do not send another ferry for the "overflow"

Hey Minde...
We will be staying at SMS in July. Our flight gets in a little earlier than yours (but who knows, they've changed it three times already) and we are also renting with Amalie. We plan to stop at Cost U Less as well and are planning to pick up something on our way to the villa. Granted, you know both islands much better than we do (newbies) but I will let you know the amount of time it took us to get from the airport to SMS (with stops) and you should be able to gauge your time based on ours (barring any delays). I will let you know what time we land, leave the store and roll off the ferry in STJ. Candi's sounds like a great idea so we may give them a call too. So excited!!

Hmmmmm.... Thanks, Pia!
I do hate this late arrival, but it is what it is. I guess we'll make a beeline to the car ferry, and if it's going to be dark anyway, just do our shop and pick up our Candi's. I'm pretty sure the caretaker would be willing to meet us at the bottom of the hill so at least we're following her tail lights. It might even be better than in the daylight. Driving up there to look at the place (which is beautiful!), I had to stop, cause Blaine was having a full-fledged panic attack LOL! I know he'll get over it as soon as he's done it a few times, but....
Thanks, all!

Thanks, Lynniegirl! That would be awesome. Candi's # is 340-779-1452. If you call when you get on the car ferry, your dinners will be ready when you get there. We get the ribs, beans and rice, and cole slaw if we're getting take out. YUM!

you are going to love staying up there-- the views are wonderful.......
if it rains a bunch the road gets tricky, but other than that -- it's not too, too bad... just switchinto 4 wheel drive and off you go....

Yes, we're so excited, Loria! I was chatting with Dreamshark about their next place, and when I saw that view, I decided we just had to try it. Then Blaine won the trip to Costa Rica, and we cashed that in for cash and this November trip :)
Cannot wait!

It will be faster/ easier to buy your soda & ribs once you get to Coral Bay . Love City Grocery Store is the right turn at the dumpsters( just past old gas station)in Coral Bay .
For ribs , Cases By The Sea , is two minutes past the grocery store on your way to your villa. Since it is going to be dark anyway , why not stop and eat at Shipwreck Landing ( also on the way to Calabash Boom.).
Sun, Moon , Stars is a wonderful villa and Bonny is the perfect hostess . Have Fun !

Yes, it is, Sherban. And yes, Anne Marie, we met Bonny and she's a doll! We'll definitely be hitting the Coral Bay BBQs, but we start every trip with Candi's. I drool just thinking about it!

He will be fine just take it slow. Not going to lie it's steep but not that bad, we flew up it cause we thought the bumps wern't as bad that way lol not smart but it was fun. The views are to die for up there. Now walkin up it is a different story I had to take three breaks to make it to the top.

It will be my pleasure. You guys have been so nice and helpful to me, it's the least I can do to give something in return! :D And thanks for Candi's phone number, we will give them a call.
