Ummmm
Yeah
I qualify as one unfamiliar with the roads as I'll be driving for the first time on Saturday! Whereabouts is this 2 mile stretch? I was gonna take centerline from the ferry over to coral bay. I'd hate to start off by falling off the road. Might make a mark.

The weak spots are on the stretch of road heading down the hill into Coral Bay. It's the only way in and out so you don't really have a choice. I just drive a little more towards the center of the road if there are no cars coming in the opposite direction

This is below the north shore road. I would be concerned about a cement truck or Vitran bus breaking through... There is nothing below the road and will take an engineering marvel to build a structure to support the road.

""There is a blind curve, and anyone who does not know, a tourist or a motorist who is unfamiliar, could easily go over," Barbier said."
Really!? C'mon, have enough driving anxiety as it is, don't need to be following Fisheye over a cliff....

I would think there would be a huge liability risk if someone is injured because of this. Forget the drawn out bid process...just fix it already..

I'm with Chet. How do you fix a road that has nothing under it? Wouldn't even begin to imagine. Guess that's why I'm not an engineer.

Sandy Pants, loosen your leggins! You'll be fine. Pia and Mr. Pia make the trip everyday and it's a case of common sense. Drive left and more towards the center of the road. Enjoy the vaca.

We noticed this last week when we were there. First part of the week, nothing. Every day it got a little worse. The last time we drove by I couldn't help but think that it looked like a chunk of the road could drop off at any moment.

It looks like it is on a fairly straight portion of the road by STJ standards. It also looks like there's a fairly small piece of pavement missing. There are several solutions to fix this road. A retaining wall could be built to hold the road and the dirt below it in place. It will have to be excavated out to get to firm soil and filled with new material before the pavement can be repaired. Since it was the direct result of rain storm, the drainage issue must be addressed to prevent it from happening again.

When we were there in 2011 or 12 a hole opened up in middle of the road overnight. It was the talk of Coral Bay. We met an older local gentleman who, upon hearing the news, said that the road was built with no thought to drainage, and that anything that happened up there would come as no surprise to him. This year when we were there they did a little work on that section. I think it was mostly to prepare for 8 Tough Miles.
