Verizon coverage

I checked my Verizon plan. They say calls are $1.99 per min, texts are free and data is free. I can get by with text and data alone if I can get a signal.
Verizon map shows mostly 2G coverage in Cruz Bay and surrounding areas. Anyone know if there is a signal on the north shore? Cinnamon Bay?

I have Verizon and was there this past December/January. I was able to make calls and receive texts in Cruz Bay. I was hit with data charges when I wasn't connected to wifi ... not sure why. I had absolutely no service when I was out near Maho Bay and it was very spotty in Coral Bay. I would send a text and it would sometimes take 20 minutes or longer to go through. Calls were impossible to make out there, as were picture messages. YOu also have to be careful when you are in some spots on the island because you may pick up the Tortola towers and that can get very costly. From reading others comments, Verizon seems to be one of the worst plans to have on island unfortunately.

I would double check that free data statement. I was told by Verizon to turn off all my auto updating and everything else because if my phone used data the charges would be very large. I use a cheap AT&T gophone on the island, and just have my calls forwarded to it. It works almost everywhere and it's $2 a day for unlimited calls and text. I used my verizon phone for data only when I could pick up wifi.

Last January, we checked before and during our stay about Verizon's policies. In both cases, we were told that, as long as we didn't make/receive voice calls or send/receive picture texts, we wouldn't be charged extra. In other words, non-picture texts, email and web access would be free. (Our plan allows for unlimited texting.)
When we got our bill, we were charged extra for email and web access. However, when I phoned Verizon to explain what their representatives had told us, they removed the extra charges and apologized. I think there's some internal confusion at Verizon about their policies, so don't hesitate to contact them if you suspect you've been overcharged.
We recommend using AT&T's Go Phone on STJ, although one of the towers was out last January and some calls got dropped. We advise against buying the cheapy-cheapy Go Phone . . . the audio quality is poor. My wife had to do some conference calls and was very happy with Skype reliability and audio quality, but it requires a decent Internet connection.

Verizon is an iffy deal on all USVIs. When I lived there I used ATT,as do most residents. All cell phone service can be spotty once you leave Cruz Bay.

I have Verizon & turn off my data roaming while in STJ. Text messages are 50 cents incoming & outgoing even on the unlimited plan.
