We flew home today on USAirways. The scheduled routing was: St Thomas to Charlotte, NC. After boarding the pilot announced we would be making a stop in San Juan first to pick up additional required fuel. Anybody know why this might happen? Why wouldn't they fuel the plane in St. Thomas?

Since it is the end of the month, there may be a fuel shortage on STT... I believe such a situation has happened in the past.

Maybe as it was Carnival a lot of airport workers might not have shown up therefore no one to refuel

(don't laugh it is a possibility)

Very possible scenarios I think. My recent experience departing from the St. Thomas airport on a Saturday morning leads me to think they are in serious need for expansion and or re-organization. For future trips we may try to avoid departing on a weekend.
