Where are the best breezes?

We have stayed on the Coral Bay Side, at Maho, and at Cruz Views. So far we had great breezes on the Coral Bay side and at Maho, but the one time we stayed at Cruz Views we had very poor breezes. Was this a fluke or are the breezes not as good on that part of the island? So where are the best breezes? :?

We stayed on skytop in fish bay and had warm breezes blowing all day, all night, everyday, that was one of the things we really enjoyed about being up so high.

I think the Coral Bay side including Upper Carolina, Ajax peak, etc. The higher up the better!!

In general, the trade winds favor an eastern exposure, or a spot up high. They shift a bit towards the north east in winter, when they blow a bit stronger, and shift a bit south east during the summer, when they can die off for weeks at a time. It's remarkable, though, just how much the local topography can shift and amplify the prevailing breezes. You can have too much of a good thing when it comes to breezes. We had looked at a villa on the hills behind Coral Bay years ago whose deck was not very livable due to strong local winds redirected from a nearby hill; if you ever left the sliders open, napkins and such inside would go flying. We have a plot of land up on Mamie Peak which faces east, but the terrain of nearby Bordeaux mountain redirects the breezes there to come from the south. A neighbor who built there found out afterwards that driving rain would come in from the south, whereas they built their home with overhangs to the east. A villa that we once rented on Boatman Point, Beit Hawa, had a strong case of locally amplified winds, and we were forever hearing loud whistles and wailing from small chinks in the side facing the breeze. In this case, we would have been forewarned if we had been up on our Hebrew; "Beit Hawa" means "House of Wind".

All the best,

Kevin

No breezes at Cruz Views throughout many stays. Maybe during a hurricane, but I've never felt a breeze.

We have only stayed there late June and early July, but upper Chocolate Hole, specifically Rock Ridge Road, has had excellent breezes. They may be gentle in the morning or warm in the afternoon, but they provide a constant relief from the hot summer sun.

Hmmm. Maybe that's why you're always complaining about bugs. Now that you are planning to walk on the wild side (i.e., Coral Bay) you'll have to let us know if that helps with the bug magnet problem.

I think the tradwinds really favor coming from the east side. There always seems like there are clouds going through the Francis Drake Passage towards St. Thomas. Our house is near the top of Bordeaux Mountain and tends to be breezy and at this time of year can drop to 69 degrees at night. A bit nippy sometimes. The breeze does help with the bugs.

I agree with "up high". We stayed way up above Calabash Boom late July and early August last year and the breezes were so nice and NO bugs! Have fun, Ruby, I'm a teacher, too, and can't wait to get outta here! Although, no trip in the works as of now.
