Are the skeeters really as bad as it sounds or is there some exageration going on.We're bringing 4 newbies in 2 weeks and would hate to think that it would be uninhabitable.
Hey,I just had an idea,the BDFT needs to stay out on the beach all week.With the amount of alcohol in their bloodstream,them skeeters will still be asleep when we are there.

Not Jorge, but just returned Sunday night from our first trip.

I have to say there really are a ton of the mosquitos right now. We stayed up on gift hill and had been told the breezes would make them less up there. Not really true. We couldn't enjoy the deck in the evening as much as we wanted because of those pests! We had the citronella candles going and even had one going in the house with the screen doors closed.

We did find that they were bad at the beach early in the morning and late in the evening. Didn't bother us walking around in town, but occasionally at some of the restaurants they were bad outside. I had over 25 bites on the first day and thought it was just because I was extra sweet The rest of our group started having bites show up about two days later. We used tons of spray, the patches and that seemed to help a little. They never bothered us while in the water at the beach, but were bad in the evening in the pool at the villa.

I'm so relieved to know they aren't always this bad and you may find them less in the next two weeks if it stays warm and sunny without the monsoon rains. Even with all that being said...we all absolutely loved St. John as newbies and we just got used to slapping the bugs as needed. There is too much else to enjoy to concentrate on the bites!!

Too dang funny.

Taking a little rain delay right now from the fun in the sun. One more advantage to taking your pool float to the beach is that you can get out in the water far enough away from 'dem 'skeeters.

I will second that the mosquitos are BAD right now...the worst I've seen in the nearly two years I've been here. I don't know if your newbies will have this problem, but being "fresh blood," I was eaten alive my first month on island, even though the mosquitos were not bad at that time. Add that possiblity to how many mosquitos are here now, and it could be bad...
On a more positive note, Nic is absolutely right:

Avoid being outside at dusk and dawn, and stay away from the vegetation on the beaches, especially if it's overcast. Do what you can to keep the mosquitos away and have fun!

I'm worried about it too. As a special treat, we're sending our daughter and her friend to St. John for a week starting Friday, staying at Estate Lindholm. Our daughter has been to St. John, but its been quite a few years, and her friend has never been to the Caribbean. They were planning on a lot of hiking (they might want to re-think that plan). I'm hoping for sunny weather at least. Looks miserable today, but I know that can change quickly.

I don't think this will last two weeks. It's suppoosed to get gusty next week and I'm hoping that will help.

Ahh, the sweet smell of bug spray--the skeeters are bad, don't even notice the noseeums

Just get your spray, coils, & citronella candles & you'll be fine. Instead of lathering up with smell good lotion from Bath & Body Works after a shower, I have to use bug spray.

It is 5:30p here & closed the screens already on the doors & windows & am hoping the bedroom ac & other ceiling fans keep us okay

wontongirl kept asking me, "gosh, you look so moisturized & shiny." Well, it's my new beauty secret---OFF! By the pool or beach. Bullfrog has a sunscreen 30 SPF w/ deet.

Do the villas supply citronella candles or did you bring them?

We always buy them at St John hardware if the villa doesn't have them.

All I brought was spray, but we got lucky the villa already had 3 cans left over from previous visitors & citronella candles & coils.
