CAR RENTAL ! We have never had a rental longer than a week. This time Hubby and I are coming over 4 days earlier than the other 3 couples...so we are going to need a vehicle for 11 days. Everything I find is like $$$$ out the wazoo!! We want something like or similar to the size of a Jeep Liberty. One of the couples will be riding with us when they get there and the other 2 couples are getting a shared car as well. It is terrible when a rental looks like it is going to be almost as much as 2 plane tickets. Please, if you have any ideas how to make this a little more affordable ...share your ideas and reasons with me. I would be most grateful !

I can't offer any help, all I can do is say that yep, it definitely sucks.

Yup, rentals are $$$. I just posted the same topic last week during my search. The only thing you can do is travel during low season (but check dates because car rental low season is different than villa low season).
At least you get to split the cost.

We are going to be on the island for 2 weeks in July, and yes, it is MORE then our plane tickets to get there...Just crazy!

We had the same problem last year. We were sharing a car rental for a week but we stayed four extra days. At first I didn't reserve the jeep for the extra days but after we were there all week my wife and I realized we wanted to go to Coral bay for day trips- we hadn't been all week because we had a 1 year old with us and we bit the bullet and I rented for the extra days. We moved to the St john Inn for the extra days- if you are in town and are happy going only to beaches easily accessible by taxi (Hawksnest Trunk, Cinammon) or walking from Cruz Bay (like Honeymoon) then you might be happy without a car. Otherwise enjoy until the credit card bill arrives.

PatrickMcc....I'm willing those first 4 days to just do beaches within walking distance or take a couple of taxi's...unfortunatly Hubby is not.

Got To Get Away...will look at your post too. What did you decide? We have rented on STT and STJ many times before but can't seem to decide which way to go this time. All on STT....means taking barge back and forth a couple of times...since the couple that will ride with us has to be picked up at the airport on Saturday. Also the other 2 couples are wanting to rent on STT. Renting on STJ means airport taxi's and pass. ferry. Newbies are not so comfortable doing that by themselves. Sorry just pulling my hair out a little bit.

Never thought about car rental being so nerve racking ( never has before) just thought airfare would be my only worry !!

Sharing the ride but not the cost??? What is the deal! We have done that for our kids and my mom, but not for people who are "sharing" the vacation with us. Sharing the expenses means you get to afford the vacay!

I'm confused - so you are sharing a vehicle with another couple but they aren't chipping in? - no way for me unless they are paying part of your *private chef meal* or your *drinks and dinner at ZoZo's* or your half of a day trip with Capt John* or (well you get the picture )

I think what is throwing this off...is that we are coming 4 days earlier than they are...soooo...maybe the solution is to rent a smaller car for us just for those days then turn it in and have a Jeep ready to pick up for the week with them. And then "share " that cost. Gonna make this work !

OK...think this is worked out now ! Have reserved a smaller car at Budget for the first 4 days of our trip. Then made second reservation . Will turn in the smaller car on the 15th. while at the airport picking up friends, and pick up the SUV from Budget also, for the next 7 days. Doing it this way is coming out about $240 less for the 11 day time period. And I can show newbies the exact cost for the 7 days and ..........

If it makes you feel any better I am paying close to 500.00 for a 2 door jeep for 1 person, yikes! Like Pia said, it is what it is, I rather have the freedom to come and go as I please and you get to share costs, which I don't, but it's all good!!

Ut oh, just read that you won't be sharing costs, I don't understand why not...
