I have been making packing list for myself ( yes, I am that anal) and it got me thinking that I bet some people pack some pretty funny or odd things that are a MUST have in their suitcase??

My blanket! And every trip I bring my least favorite but freshly sharpened chef and paring knives, and then leave them at the rental.

Last year I mailed (cuz I could not carry on) my gel ice pack for my back. Never needed it. Go figure!

My wife packs about 24 outfits for a 7 day trip. I always think that's pretty odd.

Kimchi! If I left ii in its jar the TSA would surely confiscate it, but I double plastic bag it and it sails through with my carry-on each time (including yesterday).

So I have to admit I did not know what Kimchi was.. I watched a Korean lady prepare on a youtube video... Interesting!! What does the taste resemble??

Pam: "What does the taste resemble??" Hard to say; very spicy sauerkraut would begin to come close. People either love it or hate it... I once seriously offended a woman at work by inviting her to savor the aroma of a full jar. Kimchi is sort of the Korean national dish, and served with nearly every meal. It originated as a way to preserve vegetables past the harvest season, before refrigeration. Cabbage, red chilies, and garlic would be buried in a pot in the backyard and allowed to ferment. I make a killer kimchi bokumbop (fried rice) and kimchi scallion pancakes with it, in addition to eating it straight. Do try these if you can find a Korean restaurant in your area, although depending on where you are in Maine, that could be a stretch...
All the best,
Kevin

Zip lock bags in all sizes. I used them for packing, snacks, for making ice, keeping things organized. I can't travel without them.

Kevin, I adore kimchi, but as a non-Korean, I have to say that the smell is the least wonderful thing about it!
It also took me a few tries to really develop an appreciation, but now that I 'get it', I'm hooked (I have a jar in my fridge right now).

And to answer the original post...if we're staying in a new house we're not familiar with, we bring a dark sheet and a roll of masking tape just in case the bedroom has windows facing the sunrise and no good blinds (we like our sleep in the morning)!

Hmm now I will have to try some! I am in central Maine.. no Korean here, but I make it to Portland alot to visit my children quite frequently. There are more ethnic options there for restaurants. I will check out the grocery store for sure.

This is a great idea! I am normally at 7-8 riser if I have the day off. But, for some reason I am up early when on the island. I don't want to waste one precious moment of paradise! Although, some mornings it is the rotten rooster that wakes me up if I forget to put in the earplugs in the night! LOL
