For a couple trips, we did the last week in February which sometime spilled over into the first week of March, depending on the calendar.
I liked that period better than late January, the water was calmer.

i generally like that time too since it is nice to get the hell out of dodge by that time (though it has gotten crazy busy-) we will be there in march this year as well-- probably with half of the eastern seaboard........cannot wait until we are untethered from school vacations!

We are timeshare folks and our week-weeks are at the end of March. It is high season and it can be busy but we've come up some routines and strategies for dealing with the time year. At least they work for us.
We usually rent our car on island. That way we most always have a spot to park when we are in town. We reserve early because we can. We also believe we are contributing to the local economy. It may be a little less convenient but we are no longer dragging children around with us after a long hot travel day. We understand others preference for renting on STT.
We have found that there is no reason to stay away from the more popular beaches ie., Trunk, Big Maho etc. Just get up early and go. When it begins to get crowded, get out. For years we avoided Trunk like the plague. Recently we just happen to rise early, drove by the parking lot at Trunk to find it almost empty. So we pulled in. We found a nice shady spot and had a great snorkel. As the beach filled up we were able to give up our spot and our parking place to some very grateful people. We moved on to one the of less popular coral rubble beaches. Even in March it is possible to find a beach either all or almost all to yourself. You may have to do a little hiking or swimming but it is possible.
We bring snacks to the beach and have a large late lunch out. Then we return to the villa in the late afternoon, dip in the pool, read and nap. Then it is time for cocktails and a light dinner or as they say "supper" up country. On occasion we will step out in the evening.
We do not slavishly follow this routine. We usually plan one or two evenings out for dinner. We have our favorites. We may also plan a day trip or check the NPS schedule for hikes or lectures. Easy breezy. Most important stay calm and be happy.

We went last year in March and didn't care for it. We normally go in December and the island is green and lush! In March it was very brown and dry. Of course it is also a lot busier.

I went mid-March a few years ago. Some rain and lots of clouds, but nice and warm.
Much busier than what I experience in November. It was great though. The only thing I could have done without was the spring breakers playing frisbee and football on the beaches.
Enjoy. I look forward to everyone going in spring. Even though I'm not, I know my winter will be done
