Jellies?

Can anyone tell me if there is a particular time of the year when you are more apt to see jellies? Or is it completely random?

We will be in the islands the last week of July, first week of August. We usually come in June, but have also been there during February and Nov/Dec. I've seen Walnuts in June, and in late November, they were prevalent at Buck Isand on STX.

They are my least favorite thing in the ocean (puting it mildly), and I always have my plastic bottle of Vinegar in my beach bag just in case, but i'd rather not have to use it.

I really can't answer for sure. There were lots of small, clear jellies in several north shore bays when we were there in late April/early May. They were about silver dollar size and could not be avoided however, they didn't cause any problems.

Typically when the ocean is at it's warmest so July/August/September they tend to be more noticeable. I have just started swimming Maho a few times per week and have noticed the jelly "blobs" are there.

I've seen them on both our April/May trip and our August trip. I notice them more at certain beaches than others, specifically Francis and Maho. I don't think I've noticed them in places like Hawksnest, Trunk. They don't seem to bother anyone else in my family, but I ran into 1 and was stingy and itchy for a few hours, had a red spot there as well. I've really kept my eyes open for them since that first encounter. Would love to know why I'm the only one that reacts to supposedly innocuous walnuts (or maybe very small moon jellies)!

Last year at the end of May/first of June. It rained alot and there were dismembered tenticals. We had to fight them a day or 2. A couple of years ago, in July we were surrounded by purple jellies around Water Lemon. No stings.

Pia...can you elaborate on jelly blobs? Are they the little walnut babies everywhere? You know, the ones with no tentacles. I can deal with those.

just got back and the jellies are the little ones with no tentacles. Saw them at Maho, Francis, and Vie's. They did not bother me.
