Not that I really want to think about the end of my trip before I even get there however I'm just trying to plan. Is there any place in STT that you can store your luggage while you shop in town before your departure from the airport? I understand that once you go to the airport you can't leave.

If you are in Charlotte Amalie near the STT/STJ ferry dock this might be a place... this information is almost two years old, so you might want to call to be sure they are continuing this service.


V.I. Answer Desk: Luggage Storage for Tourists

Source reader Richie Peden of Atlanta, Ga., asks: "is there anywhere in downtown Charlotte Amalie that we can store our luggage for a few hours to shop before our flight leaves?"
The answer is yes.
Carmen Staley of V.I. Welcome Center and Native Arts and Crafts Cooperative says the co-op, along with an array of local art, has offered the service since 2001.
Located at the corner of Veterans Drive and Tolbod Gade, facing Vendors Plaza, the co-op is run by the Committee to Revive our Culture, a not-for-profit organization.
The co-op takes baggage Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
The daily charges are $1 for a small bag, $2 for a medium and $3 for a large bag.
Staley says they get a lot of business from passengers arriving on the nearby St. John ferry and St. Thomas hotels, whose check-out time is usually 11 a.m.
However, she noted, "The service is available for anybody."
The co-op is also a good location for visitors to pick up locally made hot sauces, crafts, dolls, jewelry, soaps, sculptures and paintings to stick in that luggage.

We have done this severel times in the past including last week. We leave our bags with the taxi drivers down at the customs building in CA. They put the bags in a secured room with a person sitting outside the door. They only ask that you use thier taxi to get you to the airport. We never have had a problem and it is only a 5 minute walk to down town CA.

For our last trip we had Rachel keep our luggage because the Charlotte Amalie ferry wasn't running that particular day for some reason. Normally we take that ferry over and the Visitor's Center is right across the street from where the ferry drops you off. It's somewhat diagonal to the right from the ferry stop in a yellow building with blue shutters. The entrance is on the side across from the parking lot where the vendors set up. Luggage is placed out of sight in a back room with no public access. The ladies who work there are always very nice and make sure that you get a reliable cab driver for the ride to the airport. It's nicely air conditioned in there also so it's a relief from the heat of the ferry ride when you drop off and and a nice relief while waiting for a cab after walking around Charlotte Amalie since it always seems to be hotter than Hades whenever we head home. There are also restrooms - not luxurious, but at least you know exactly where to find one! There are plenty of cab drivers waiting at the ferry dock promising to store your luggage but I've always been reluctant to trust it to someone I don't know who's taking it to some unknown location. Plus you don't know whether it's being stored in a hot vehicle for several hours which isn't the best for cameras or other electronics that you may not want to lug around. Just one more thing to think about.

the last 2 times i've been i left my luggage with the cab driver. he gives you his card so you can call him when you are ready to go to the airport. it's worked out really well both times.
