I keep reading in Trip Advisor and others that Charlotte Amalie is not safe at night. Is this true other than the usual precautions of being in a town at night?

Charlotte Amalie is just like any other city at night. If you use your common sense you are fine:) Stay away from the un-lit back alleys, ect. We have been downtown after dark and been just fine. Never have we felt un-safe. However, besides the restaurants which are very well lit, ect, there really isn't much to do downtown at night as all the shops are closed!
