No, we are not practicing nudists...BUT, have read in some older forums (not this one) that there are some clothing optional beaches in St. John. Not saying that we are going to do it, but, where should someone go IF they wanted to try sans clothes? Or, just stay on your own villa, etc.?

Back in the day one might be sans bathing suit at Solomon Beach and sometimes Jumbie but that's pretty much a thing of the past. Nudity is not allowed on any National Park beach. If you wish to be without tan lines you'd best accomplish that at your private villa.

I saw posts in other forums from several years back, of Park Rangers distributing a Ticket for nudity.

It's not just illegal, but it's disrespectful to the culture in the West Indies, so if you want to be naked as a jaybird, please do it in the comfort of your own villa. Many villas will describe their pool areas as "clothing optional" so you know where you can count on having that kind of privacy.

Salomon used to be the unofficial nude beach on STJ, but it was never legal and people only got away with it because it is a more remote beach and rangers didn't patrol the area regularly. Supposedly they have stepped up their patrols and will fine those they find breaking the law.

Little story here. On our trip last month, we were spending the last afternoon at Trunk, it was a beautiful day, a short but heavy rain shower moves through, clears the beach of most of the folks - awesome. It's 3:00, But we are sticking it out, since it's our last afternoon in paradise. We start getting chomped by no-see-ums, the four of us head out to the water, figure if we are mostly underwater we can stick it out a little longer. Now just down the beach there is a topless woman in a teeny thong. now I know that's not "nudity" according to EU standards. But next thing we know, her male companion becomes a photographer, and this woman is rolling around on the wet sand, she is posing here, she is posing there, she is strutting up the beach, she is doing the slow motion backlit wet hair flip. (Think Baywatch). All while we are hiding from the bugs in the water, and trying not to laugh too loud.

Now, no rangers appeared, no tickets were issued. But judging by how many no-see-um bites our group sustained that last afternoon, we all had to laugh, cause I'm sure she had even more and in more interesting places. :D

Last year we ran in to a group of European girls a couple of times. Once at the Tourist Trap where they were rather rude, and once at Salt Pond beach where they were all topless. People were visibly shocked by this but the girls didn't seem to mind. Watching some of the reactions was amusing for us.

When we took our granddaughter to STJ in June, we made our first stop the afternoon of our arrival at Maho. At sunset we came out of the water to find three women on a photo shoot for a beer company. The model was topless. Since there were only the six of us on the beach and we were not making a complaint, they probably finished without being arrested.

I was reading the replies to S/O. He said, if you are 21 and a gymnist you can be topless with no complaints from me! Men......when we were in Petra, Greece 8 years ago he wanted to film all of the topless Euro women on the beach. I told him no, an invasion of their privacy, plus take that big *! grin off of your face!!! There was a strange German lady at our hotel in Molyvos who kept her top off to tan and put in on to swim....she and her husband were in their 60's...culture shock for the SC couple!

That would be sad to have a partner who only thought 21 year old gymnasts look good topless. While in the Virgin Islands I saw plenty of women who weren't quite up to our typical standard of beauty (and age) wearing two piece bathing suits and I loved that they felt comfortable enough in their own skin to enjoy the sun and the beach however they wanted.
