				Hi,
We check in in 2011 and then check out in 2012. How should the 8%/10% hotel tax be calculated?
Thanks!

I would assume the tax is calculated each day. The 2011 days at 8% and the 2012 days at 10%

Actually, I think it has to do with when you book. For instance, if someone books my villa for next March, but makes the booking now, the rate is only 8%. Any booking after Jan 1 will be charged the 10% rate. This was my understanding from our property management company anyway.

I was told that the tax applies to stays beginning January 1, regardless of the booking date

I agree - my understanding is that any reservation that takes place in 2012 will be assessed the 10% rate because the stay is in 2012. It does not matter when you book your visit.
Therefore a stay that takes place in both 2011 and 2012 will be charged 8% for any nights in 2011 and 10% for any nights in 2012.

I stand corrected! Someone should tell my property management company because I think they are doing it wrong. That wouldn't come as a huge surprise, though.

We booked in 2011 and are renting (from an owner) in February 2012 and we are being charged the tax as described above, 10%.

This is what I assumed as well & it was corrected.
Thanks everyone!
