Wow. I thought there were some harsh things being said down here in NJ/NY about what could be an epic collapse, but I was just clicking around on the Boston sports websites and blogs, and sentiment has moved from panic to outright disgust, but at least one blog kept its sense of humor with this video image of Sox fans that made me laugh:

They broke my heart so badly in 2003 that nothing they do can hurt me now. See you next year!

Man o man the probabilities of what happened last night is off the charts...

The following is not mathematically rigorous, since the events of yesterday evening were contingent upon one another in various ways.

But just for fun, let’s put all of them together in sequence:

• The Red Sox had just a 0.3 percent chance of failing to make the playoffs on Sept. 3.
• The Rays had just a 0.3 percent chance of coming back after trailing 7-0 with two innings to play.
• The Red Sox had only about a 2 percent chance of losing their game against Baltimore, when the Orioles were down to their last strike.
• The Rays had about a 2 percent chance of winning in the bottom of the 9th, with Johnson also down to his last strike.

Multiply those four probabilities together, and you get a combined probability of about one chance in 278 million of all these events coming together in quite this way.

My neighbor was watching the game with his young son. When the rain delay started, he told the boy that if he went to sleep, he would wake him when play started up again. The boy fell asleep and when the game resumed, my neighbor thought about just letting his son sleep---it was late, school tomorrow, etc. But then he thought about how much fun it would be for both of them and what a special memory it would be for the boy. So he woke him up. They sat there together and watched. The boy saw it happen. His father can't believe that he did such a thing to his own son. Neither will ever be the same.

This is a return to the terrible old days.
