We have a trip scheduled with Palm Tree Charters. Just curious what a customary tip would be? I have absolutely no clue.

I worked charter boats for year's I don't tip Captains who own the boat I will tip first mates or Captains who are employees. Always in cash and between 15 and 20 precent. If you own the boat charge what you need to make your profit. Ok Flame away

No flame from here, I agree. Employees get tipped, owners don't. I do think it's customary to pick up the owner's meals however.

I think it makes a difference if the owner is the only employee and they provide me with kick ass service.

I am the owner of my own company...I am also the only employee. When I provide my customers with an amazing experience, over and above what they paid me for, I gladly accept a tip and I think I deserve it.


Do what you are comfortable with, but we tip, owner or not.

OK, just want to make it clear then -- Pia, you said 15 - 20% for captain and crew regardless of whether captain owns the boat.

It seems this is the way it has been for over a decade.

I'm in NY and the rule with service people, like hair dressers, was tip the staff, but not the owner. All of a sudden, I noticed people were tipping the owner. Maybe some weren't sure who the owner was, or simply didn't want to get into trouble!

I think it still works out, though -- take the 15 - 20 % and just divide it up among everybody. Maybe they pool it, maybe they fight it out; who knows what they do -- that is not my problem. And I don't get into trouble!

Between three couples we tipped Captain John a lot...He's worth it

We usually tip 20 percent for a good time. Owner or no owner.
