I remember reading about someone who used a beach bag they could lock to a object. Was it Kyss brand? If so how did you like it? Lots of times we ask someone to watch our stuff while we snorkel but on the isolated beaches it would be nice.

We bought a Kyss bag for our last trip. We liked it alot and highly recommend it. We snorkeled at Maho early one morning...not a soul around for an hour...and we had complete confidence that our belongings were safe. Not only did we use the chain to attach the chairs and cooler to the bag, we were able to attach the end of the chain to the zipper pull so that no one could open it.
You won't be sorry if you purchase one.

This post certainly got me thinking ... would you St. John veterans really recommend this kind of thing? I imagine there will be a number of different times that my wife and I will be out swimming or snorkeling with our valuables left on the beach (keys, camera, etc.).

We bought a PacSafe for our backpack last year and really like it. It is definitely a great deterrent from any grab-and-go type of theft. We use it on the beach and in the jeep if we are out and about. It certainly gives me peace of mind when I am out snorkeling. With that being said, we have never had any issues on the beach. We have had a camera taken by the car rental company when they swapped out vehicles and had an Ipod taken from our bags on the ferry. We have learned to be much more diligent on our travels - we take nothing valuable with us, take our camera in the water, etc.

Thanks everyone this forum is the greatest. I was going to order the bag but after seeing pacsafe ordered that. On longer hikes we like backpacks instead of caring a bag so I think that will work the best for us. I will let you know how I like it after our trip in Jan.

I ordered a PacSafe bag specifically for the beach but then once I got it didn't even take it on our trip to STJ last month.

It would stop an opportunist thief who wasn't willing to spend 10 seconds figuring it out, but that's about it.

I dont know about that device, but we used a small waterproof clip on box for our wallet, keys and money when we went last time. I cliped it to my swimsuit strap and we felt much better. (It would float too) I would not take a camera to the beach unless it was cheep, or waterproof so I could take it with me. I do not feel unsafe on STJ, but I don't want to be foolish either.

I've left all kinds of stuff on the beach while snorkeling (camera, phone, money, keys...) and never had a problem. But all it takes is one theft to ruin your day so now I'm rethinking my casual attitude. (I'd be mad if someone stole my stuff.)

Has anyone tried this? Too small for my camera but it would work for keys, phone, iPod, etc.

We have the Kyss beach bag and love it. Have used it two years in St. John, but it is nice so many other times too. I do agree it would be nice to have one to use with a backpack for a lot of the beaches in STJ. I'm sure you'll be happy with what you got.

I saw someone wearing beach chairs as a backpack. That is what we need to figure that out before our next trip.
