I don't really find Tortola all that exciting.
What are you looking to do and/or see?

I've also never been there in the 12 years visiting STT and have been told that I'm not missing anything really. You may feel differently.

Also didn't find tortola any better than St John. Pretty island, but just wasn't worth the trip. Don't rent a scooter. We rented one to tour the island on. It wouldn't get up the hills. Had to get off and push. Brakes would heat up and go out on the way down. There wasn't anything wrong with the scooter, the roads were just too steep for the size to handle. Very irritated with the rental company for not pointing this out when we left.

We took the ferry from Red Hook to West End and a taxi to Roadtown. I enjoyed lunch and drinks at Pusser's. They have a nice store, too. Probably worth the trip just to say you've been there.

I'd have to agree with some of the other posts, as a change of "scenery", it honestly has nothing on STJ. Our first trip to the VIs/Caribbean we spent our first 3 nights in Cane Garden Bay, then hopped over to STJ for another 4 nights. Needless to say, we've been back to STJ, but not Tortola. I really liked it, was certainly a good way to start off that trip, just limin on the beach. We felt really off the grid and in a different country. But as a destination for a Day?? Hmmmmm, that's a tough call.
I do have to say that Cane Garden Bay had pretty interesting people watching one day when the 2 cruise ships were docked in roadtown. I think they take them all to CGB.

Hertz has a West End rental car kiosk. You can hit the North side from Smugglers Cove to Brewers Bay and then pop up to Sage Mountain. It's a fun day, but... its a big place and the fun parts are much farther apart than on other islands. September will be quiet.
Cheers, RickG

I spent 2 looooooooong week there a few years ago and I don't ever need to go back. Don't waste your precious time and money to go to Tortola.

OK.................. So you convinced me not to go. It just had me curious. I love STJ, have been going since 2002. So many islands to see. Thinking of Virgin Gorda as well for a day trip. I will be on STJ for 10 days, so I thought a 1 day excursion would be fun. Any suggestions? Might just have to go to Jost and hang out at Foxy's

The Baths are worth a trip if you've never been to Virgin Gorda before. It really is an incredible sight. You can take the ferry over for the day. We spent three days there one year and had a great time. Best snorkeling of the trip by far. The island isn't as pretty, though, IMO. It's much drier and more like the desert-ish area you find around Salt Pond on St. John. But the beaches and water are awesome!
