So, if you were in a situation where (God forbid) the trip you have arranged with your four kids (20,19,19,16) to the Outer Banks of NC in a couple of weeks got sidelined by a (God forbid) *storm*...

What should Plan B, be?

We have comprehensive trip insurance, so we have options.

What should I be thinking of, for a Plan B? These trips together only happen every other year and I knew it would be a risk going to the Outer Banks in late August but, we have insurance. But, insurance doesn't equal a trip. I don't want the money back, I want a vacation with our kids!

Where should we go, if we do need to bail on Plan A?

If you are flying, which I think you are, I would look first at where could I easily fly to on this airline from this airport. That would be my starting point just to kind of keep it simple.

We just booked the NC Coast for late September. We bought insurance. My plan is "If there's a storm, head west" We'll hit the NC mountains. If you're committed to making the drive down here, see what may be available in the NC mountains...maybe get a cabin in Blowing Rock or something.

Or, come to our house and watch the neighbors have sex in the pool.

Speaking of which, does your path here take you near me or do you hang east the whole way?

We are flying but have rented a mini van from the airport so we could head west, assuming the flights would still come into Wilmington. But, it seems like there isn't much of interest just west of Wilmington. So, I guess it would mean looking into last minute flights to someplace else (for SIX OF US).

Please give me specifics on these places you mention, Rob. And by that, I don't mean the nekid neighbors

Pacific Northwest - cool urban stuff in Seattle/Vancouver and take the ferry over to B&B, cycle, and kayak in the San Juan Islands.

Coastal Maine – if you can't fly into Portland ME, it is an easy drive from Boston.

wow, that first photo is spectacular!

I guess I'm confused. Is a storm headed that way? If you're flying into Wilmington, the Outer Banks are a drive. It's doubtful a storm would hit the entire NC/SC coast. Alternate suggestions so you don't have to change flights: Hilton Head Island, Wrightsville Beach/Wilmington, Charleston/Isle of Palms.

Lots of really good coastal options. But why stress over something not likely to occur?

I'm confused too....are you flying into ILM and then driving to the Banks?

Okay, okay, okay...to clarify any confusion:

1. I tend to stress about things but, on the other hand, it keeps me prepared with options "just in case."

2. There is a little something just off the coast of Africa, 92L, which most likely will not develop into anything but, it's there. Mocking me. And, the path may or may not take it close to the Carolinas. It's not even an Invest yet so predictions are sketchy at best.

3. With our insurance, we can cancel and get full refund if we cancel at any time. So, if I think the Topsail Beach vacation looks like a bust, I can get the money and start all over.

4. I will not make that decision until about 6 days before the vacation is to commence. (August 20).

5. I am just looking for ideas, in case I decide we need to regroup.

6. It's important to me that this is a wonderful vacation with our kids because we just don't get a chance to all be together very often.

7. I'd like to explore all alternative options now, so that I'm not scrambling at the last minute.

Does this make sense?

If you did head west in NC, Lake Lure is gorgeous. You could find a neat house on the lake, and there's so much to explore in that area. Asheville is close by as well.

And you want to go on vacation with your kids???

Look at beaches on FL panhanle

Yea...if worse came to worse, get on 40 from Wilmington, stop by to say Hi to me and then keep going west for another 3 hours (after we've watched the neighbors have sex) and you'll be in the mountains of NC. I haven't been out here yet, but there's apparently a lot to do in Boone/blowing Rock. Nice things to look at, good food, hillbillies, zip line tours, etc.

Or, depending on how things may track, head south into SC and hit a beach there.

Plus, we have a 3-person tent and a guest room in the basement. Y'all can fight over who sleeps where.

PS: Tposail is not the Outer Banks...I'm enough of a local now to scold you about that.

Thats why I went outside the box with my suggestions, figuring you wanted to go coastal, but wanted to be prepared to avoid the southeast coast. Makes sense to me.
