In planning our trip to Greece, eventually, we are torn between a Med Cruise or an FIT (fully independent tour).

Any recommendations between the two are welcomed.

Note: We are pretty independent folks. Don't mind renting a car, etc. But trying to figure out the boat thing to the islands we want to see is not so easy....it's rather difficult.

All ideas are more than welcomed.

Re the "fully independent tour" or Do It Yourself (DIY) planning and tour, I have found that planning a European trip takes a lot more time and cross referencing several sources to gain the traction you need to boil down logistics and gain confidence in the process i.e. that it wont wind up as a disaster.

In other words, initially it seems pretty difficult understanding train and ferry schedules and the like. At first it looks like Greek, but then you start to understand it by looking at the actual schedules online with interpretation help from Rick Steves, Frommers, Fodors, Tripadvisor, etc.

So if you are willing to put in the work, you should reach a point where it starts to click and fall into place.

Now, if you feel like you've already been there/done that and still havent made sufficent progress, then book the cruise.

With all due respect, its a lot harder than the "which ferry/which car rental/which villa" planning process posed by the VIs. But remember that first time trying to understand and plan that was a little confusing, so just multiply that by several times over.

To me its interesting and a challenge to figure out, to others, a chore or something they just cant get their arms around, but, I tell people I havent used a travel agent since they tried to talk us out of going to Cancun on our honeymoon 29 years (!) ago, so I've been a DIY travel planner for LONG time.

PS Cancun had 8 hotels at that time - now they have 40,000 hotel rooms - dont think I would recognize it.
