Does anyone go swimming at any of the beaches on St John at night? I dont mean at sunset, or just before dawn, I mean frolicking in the surf or shallows, or say taking a midnight swim at Caneel, or Francis or Salt Pond. I know folks go on snorkeling tours at night, and maybe even dive tours, but I have never heard anyone's experiences about say a romantic swim or even skinny dip on the beach posted here? No need to get personal with TMI. A previous poster was raising the question about pirannah and frogs, and I know there are no sharks in the daytime, but just saying???? Personally, I'm a "fraidy cat", but some might want to do it.

The killer frogs and the leaping pirhanna's were a figment of my imagination, don't worry about them LOL ...

However I did just read an article that you'd be wacky to be at the beach at sundown because the "sand fleas" come out from their hiding and will sting the crap out of you all over your body ....

No sharks in the daytime? Hate to burst your bubble, but although there are some nocturnal species of shark, there are plenty of diurnal species also.

Thought I recalled hearing that there has not been a reported shark v. human attack in the USVI in about 40 years. Does anyone know differently?

Knolmom, I think you are correct, and also the attack those many years ago was a barracuda. That said, there are definitely sharks around. John and I have seen black tips and lemons while snorkeling during the day, as well as nurse sharks every time (but they don't count!). Plus there are tiger sharks in the deeper waters offshore.

I have never swum in the ocean at night on St. John. Not for shark fear--more for no-see-um fear when I get out and try to get back to the room/the jeep without being eaten alive! As for skinny dipping, that is what the villa pool is for.

Would not even think of it. Jaws ruined night swimming for me. I even used to get wiggy in my pool at night.

We were at Hawksnest late one night and a few wild dogs ran down the beach. We got back in the car and left!

Just wanted some opinions on a topic I have never seen featured on the forum. The only villa we had on the beach was the one on Peter Bay. It was our wedding week and such a whirlwing I dont recall even having walked on the beach there at night. I do remember using quite a few torches around the pool to keeps the bugs off the pool/patio area. I have walked the beach at the Westin late at night, and have sat out on the beach loungers without being eaten alive, but never went in the water anywhere.
And yes, villa pools are for skinny dipping, if you can get on a trip to St John without multiple family memebers or other hangers-on around. Neices, nephews, adult children, sisters, brothers and friends. On a rare occasion, we get a few days alone at the beginning or end of a trip, but we usually stay at Caneel, Gallows or Lindholm and no skinny- dipping there.

Plus there are tiger sharks in the deeper waters offshore. I'm going to forget I saw this. Drama Girl would never get in the water again!
