Most Economical Ferry Option

Hey all. I need some advise on what is the cheapest way to get from St Thomas to St John on the ferry. I see that it departs from both Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook. My question is: is it cheaper in the long run to pay more for the ferry ride at Charlotte since its closer to the airport (is the Charlotte ferry in walking distance from the airport?)or to pay the cheaper ferry cost at Red Hook and take a taxi there? I do see that the ferry doesnt run as often from Charlotte. We dont really care about how long we are on the ferry. Not a big deal. Just want to save money if we can.....thanks everyone!

It works out within $1-$2 of each other so personal preference

Taxi to Red Hook $15.00
Ferry $6.00
Total $21.00

Taxi to CA $10.00 (debatable but this is what I have paid also have paid $6)
Ferry $12.00
Total $22.00

You can't walk to the CA ferry - well you can but it's approx 2 miles +

Looks like the Charlotte only runs like 3 times a day. So I guess Red Hook it is. Unless I call Rachael. Which might be an option. I think that will be even more though, although she seems super wonderful...

Most of the cab drivers will automatically take you to Red Hook. One time we asked to go to the downtown ferry (I'd rather be on a boat than in STT traffic) but he ignored us and we wound up in Red Hook anyway.

And there's no way you want to walk from the airport to the CA ferry, especially with luggage. It wouldn't be the way I'd want to start MY vacation, anyway.

Pia's right on cost. Not enough $$ to make a difference either way.

Rachael is worth a couple of extra $$. She makes the ride actually pleasant. Capn Dan started out wanting to save the money, but in the great scheme of things what is a few extra $$ when you are already spending thousands, and after that plane ride you want something pleasant.

Ok, I am just a little distracted, but I just noticed your ticker. 7 weeks on St. John!!! Are you doing a work program at Maho? I just dream of anything over 2 weeks.

Concordia, actually. Spending 4 weeks working there and then spending a couple of weeks celebrating my 40th birthday with friends. Can't wait! :D

We always figured it to be a wash on the taxi+ferry cost. We like the downtown ferry because it gets us on our way to StJ quicker (at least it feels that way) and I like being on the water longer. Your chance of a traffic problem is lessened once you pull away from the dock. BUT...since the new ferry terminal was built at Red Hook, the wait there is much more pleasant than the downtown ferry and of course the departure schedule and the reliability of the schedule is much better.

luvstjohn, you don't mention how many people you have in your party or how much luggage you have and here is a question that probably doesn't seem like it should apply but; are you renting a jeep?
The reason I ask is that if you have a large party or many bags and you rent the jeep on STT, you eliminate the STT taxi's, the taxi AND ferry handling fee for each bag and all passangers ride for the same price on the car barge.

It will be just me and my 15 year old son. We will have our carry ons and possibly 2 checked. Yes, one for food and the other for clothes for the both of us.

Last time when we went in 09, we shared a van/taxi thing with the other couple we were with so the four of us and the ride to Red Hook didnt scare us at all. We will just go to Red Hook.

We have already reserved a Jeep on St John from Cool Breeze so hopefully that works out well. They have been good about my confirmation and any other questions I have had so I hope they are good. Getting pretty excited.
