Ok - Now the important part of vacation - What to drink? July visit - first time with our family - two kids 10 and 14. Do most of you make your drinks at the villa or go to the restaurants/bars? What are the best drinks in your opinion. Any recipes would be greatly appreciated. Of course, have heard of the famous painkiller. Do you make it by the glass - pitcher? My husband loves Bloody Mary's any good places that make good ones? The kids will have to get by with the smoothie stand! Looking forward to vacation!!

We do both. Afternoons at the villa usually include a blender drink with rum. We are cooler people so we take bags of frozen fruit with us. Throw fruit and juice of your choice, add rum and ice and presto. Quite refreshing after spending the better part of the day on the beach drinking beer.
Our favorite place to hang and drink is Aqua Bistro in Coral bay. You can't beat the round bar and the breeze coming off the bay.
My hubby is a Bloody Mary lover as well. His favorites are Donkey Diner in Coral Bay and Lime Inn in Cruz Bay.
Whether you do one the other or both, it's all good!

Rum and then more rum and mix said rum with whatever...we haven't found anything that rum doesn't go with!!! My favorite is a Dark & Stormy (Goslings Black Seal Rum/Ginger Beer/bitters/lime) Blender drinks are always a hit at the villa! Enjoy your trip!!!

We drink plenty of water....with a rum chaser, then a lot more water, with a V.I. Pale Ale chaser, Presidente throw back, then a little more water, with Bushwhacker and painkiller chasers. If you are still thirsty, try some cold water with a BBC throw back.
Can't wait!!

For breakfast, you can start the day off right with coffee+baileys at Jake's.
Someone posted about a new restaurant that has a great brunch on weekends and I think I remember a delicious sounding bloody Mary on the menu...I can't remember the name of the restaurant, though.

The smoothie stand at the intersection of Routes 20 and 10 makes fantastic smoothies...my favorite is mango. They will ask if you want it "St. John style" which means with rum but I like it better without!
As for alcoholic beverages, you can't go wrong with a Painkiller, BBC (Bailey's, Banana, Coconut), or a Lime & Coconut. I also LOVE the Strawberry Shortcake that is served at the Lime Inn.

Here is a recipe for the first mixed drink I ever made on St. John. I was reading "A Trip to the Beach," by Bill and Melinda Blanchard, and this recipe was in it. Warning, it is rich, more of a dessert than a cocktail.
Banana Cabana
3 oz. coco lopez
2/3 cup baileys
2 ripe bananas
2 tbsp. rum (optional....heheh)
3 cups crushed ice
blend everything until smooth. Makes two drinks.

Banana Deck has a make your own Bloody Mary bar on Sundays ( and just checking their website, it says they have it on Saturdays too ). We've had lunch there twice and it was excellent!! Last month, I had a lemon vodka and Ting cocktail which was sooo good! I tried to replicate it but A-treat grapefruit soda is NOT Ting!
I'm not fond of coconut drinks so I don't have anything helpful to add about painkillers etc. I enjoy rum punches that we have had on other islands that are fruit juice based with lime, grenadine and nutmeg grated on top.
BTW - I have read your other posts and we will be there in July too ( 2-9 ). It is, by far, my kids favorite vacation.

For the villa - "Variety is the Spice of Life"! One afternoon it's a pitcher of Painkillers. Next day a pitcher of Margaritas. Pitcher of Rum Punch for another afternoon at the villa. We had 2 couples (no kids), so drinks by the pitcher kept it simple and kept us outside by the pool.

we also mix ours up for the beach- an empty water bottle or jug (depending on # of people or you level of thirst

) works great if you do not have a thermos-type container. Throw it in the cooler with some ice and your cups- and of course the nutmeg (we make painkillers).
Works very nice as a water chaser

Pia - I will have to take a look at that drink link sometime when I have more time - maybe over the weekend with a drink in hand

In a blender, add a little ice, some sugar, 1 lime cut in quarters, enough water for 2 glasses. Blend on high for 5 seconds. Strain into glasses filled with ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint.
For grownups, add white rum, muddled mint, and a splash of club soda.

A frozen Mojito? Or a Mojito slush? What do you call that? I guess it could be a Mojito Smoothy.....

Is all you people do is drink?
How do you function as humans? Do you not have families and jobs?
There is more to life than drinking away your days.
Geez!
