Hubby and I were thinking out loud wondering: Does anyone here know if STJ/USVI is covered by an early warning system? We found Collins World Atlas showing a Caribbean plate with subduction zone & two previous earthquakes over 7.8 in the Puerto Rico area. Hopefully, this question will have a reassuring answer! Thanks!

I get the email notices and have adjusted the earthquake readings to above 4... many fewer emails!

There are some great apps for iPhone or iPad if u have one. Guess it's another great reason not to rent a place directly on the beach, ehh?

Thanks everyone for all the website info and for "being there"! Did all the printouts and will read later today. Trying to keep a level head after seeing the effects on Japan. STJ is our absolute favorite island.

What does this look like in reality? I know I don't usually keep my cell on when I am on island..are there any type of warning sirens (doubtful) in the VI's or BVI's? How are the residents/visitors notified on island if they aren't near cell/internet, etc

Interestingly enough, your question came up during breakfast this morning! We don't know the answer but I'm wondering if someone here has any knowledge? We haven't quite finished reading the printouts I downloaded from other folks on this thread; hopefully this evening. We haven't noticed any siren-type horns on STJ (in February). If I find any additional info, I'll post.
Perhaps there are some posters who live on STJ or BVI who might know more answers?

Hi stjchica, We reviewed the above website downloads but did find anything specific "in reality how does this work"? I would hope there is a radio broadcast warning plan especially for island residents. However visitors, touring the area, might not have close access to a radio.
I wonder if Pia, the STJ real estate agent who frequents VIOL, might have something to offer?
