Newbie with a question...

I'm a longtime lurker in the final stages of planning our first trip to the USVIs. Thanks to everyone on this forum for sharing their travel insights and advice!

My husband and I will be staying at the BW Emerald Beach on St. Thomas for a couple of days, and then heading over to St. John where we'll be staying at Gallows Point from April 12 - 19. We'd like to stop for groceries and liquor on St. Thomas before taking the ferry to St. John. Does it make more sense for us to take a taxi to the Red Hook ferry dock and stop for groceries along the way, or should we get food/liquor in Charlotte Amalie and take the ferry from there?

You will have to pay for each parcel that you bring on the ferry, unless you can hold it on your lap. Depending on the number of suitcases and grocery bags, it could add up. Also unless you are getting a ride from the dock in Cruz Bay, it may be cumbersome to carry all of those bags.

Your best bet and probably cheapest would be to rent your Jeep on St. Thomas at the airport (close to Emerald beach), go shopping on the way to Red Hook and use the car barge otherwise your not saving any money and it will be a pain in the A$$ carring all the bags with your luggage. We had friends 2 years ago that went down 2 day ahead of us and did this and it saved us all $$$

I think that may be what we do next year! We will have family then and need to save some $$ on food. We have always rented a car on STJ, but see a lot of yall doing the STT thing We may try it.

Go to Red Hook...get the experience..fun area. Buy food on STJ see their stores...that's the idea of a vacation to the island to see what the locals do and offer. To save $$$ hitch hike...most people pick you up & it's fun!!
