Hi - I am looking to purchase a underwater camera for our first trip to STJ this summer. I went to our local camera store today and they did not have the Canon D10 that has received good reviews but they do have an Olympus TG-610 for 299.00. I went online to see if I could find any review but since it just came out in February have not been able to find reviews. Has anyone used this camera yet? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know about this particular camera, but be sure that it can go to the depths you need. If you do scuba or free diving, many of these will not work at depths.

We also wanted that camera and could not find it locally. We found it on amazon along with some accessories. It arrived quickly, got the turquoise color, and our pictures both above and below water are fantastic. It takes great videos too. There is a wrist strap that fits securely while snorkeling. However, the wrist strap attachment degraded over the first year and we had to order a replacement part where it attaches to the camera. About $16 We do not scuba so I can't report on how it performs at what depths, I believe the manufacturer states it's good to 30 feet deep. (Can't hold my breath that long) But we do love the camera for our needs.

Thank you. This is our first time snorkeling as a family so we do not need to go deep. I think they told me it was good to 30'. Thanks again.

As a long time Canon user and advocate, it is somewhat disconcerting that there have been some reports of problems/failures noted here on the forum with the Canon D10 similar to those that seemed to afflict earlier Olympus models (remembering of course that we may be more likely to hear about problems than from users who have none).
However, it has also been reported that Canon does tend to step up with superior customer service when problems do crop up, but, wouldn’t it be better for all if the design and build quality relating to water resistance were just a little better?
Hopefully the new Olympus TG-610 will prove reliable and you will be able to find user experience/reviews confirming that, or that Canon has addressed design or build quality issues to reduce returns and protect the brand name.

JMQ - I agree. It is a tough decision but I am not going to agonize over this. We will have a great vacation with either camera. I also have two other cameras that I will probably bring. I have a coolpix Nikon - takes great pictures and fits in my pocket and then my larger K100D Pentax with a zoom lens which will hopefully take those beautiful shots of the beach. I would love to hear more on the Olympus but if not will probably go with the Canon.

Hawaii - good luck with the Canon.
TIP: if you dont have one, consider getting a polarizing filter for the Pentax zoom and learn how to use it (i.e. rotating it to get max effect).
It really makes the colors of the water pop.

I'm not sure about that particular model, but I have an Olympus Stylus Tough and love it. Full HD video and 14MP.
