I found this topo map of St. John made using 1954 aerial photography, and verified and published in 1958. It really puts things in perspective. The small black squares represent houses. It's pretty amazing how few there are, even in Cruz Bay.

Love those! I'll have to share them with Mr. Lovermont. He's an ex-cartographer. He's never met a map he doesn't like, and finds survey markers all over STJ that the rest of us would just walk right past.

Tell Mr Lovemont I was a Topo Surveyor in the Army back in the day.

On south coast biggest thing missing is roads

Cool! His career was with the Ordnance Survey in the UK. He's British... but I don't hold that against him.

Speaking of maps...

Last year, for my big 5-0, my friends purchased this map of STJ, circa 1780, and then had all the guests at my surprise birthday party sign the matted area. I got it framed, and it hangs in my hallway. The photo of it isn't great, but the idea was spot on. What can I say, my friends understand my obsession.

The only thing better than this gift was actually getting to spend my birthday on STJ. Woohoo!

1780 map? You really should find a way to share it in detail. Can someone take a high res photo of it? I'd really like to see it.

Well, it's not on original map. They purchased it here:
