My co-worker is from Fiji and has plenty of family living there so her parents go back and visit yearly for 3-4 months at a time (they're there right now). I'll ask her this week about her recommendations.
When are you going?

My brother-in-law lived there for 6 years. Give us more info on where and when and other details and I will pick his brain.

If it was me I would definitely take the boat or plane out to one lf the islands called the Mamanuca islands. We visited Mana island and Malololailai, but there are many others. We went by boat and stayed for a few nights.
We also visited the south coast on Vitu Levu (main island) but liked the islands better. But it depends what you want to do.
For sure is that the Fijian people are the nicest we ever met. I hope ww can go back someday.
Bula !

For New Zealand, I would suggest at least 10 days, so if you have seen "enough" of Australia, a combination between NZ and Fiji could be very nice.
I haven't been to Australia and I bet there are so much to see there also. Have been twice to NZ and I just loved every bit of it. Whatever you decide I don't think you can go wrong.

Here's what my Fijian friend recommends:
The airport is on the main island of Viti Levu and you will will land in Nadi, which is a nice little city to go for a day. There is a very colorful, beautiful Indian temple in town that he should try and see. Then head out to the Mamanuca group of islands. Some of the onces we've stayed at are Planatation Island (our favourite), Castaway (which is probably the most popular), Treasure Island and Mana Island. A low-cost, backpacker island is called Beachcomber. If he wants to spend some time on the main island there is a nice area between Nadi and Suva (the capital city) called the Coral Coast. There are some nice hotels in Pacific Harbour. It is a nice drive, taxi or bus ride from Nadi to Suva along the coast. It's mostly a beach holiday if you go there and don't have relatives to vist:) I've attached a link to the Mamanuca Islands...
