We are going to be staying on St. John but want to spend a non-beach day on St. Thomas. I want to take the ferry to Charlotte Amalie. What can we see within walking distance? Is Paradise Point worthwhile? What about Coral World? Anything else not to miss? Thank you.

I would shop till I drop, there are some really cute shops in CA. Then I would have lunch at Gladys!

I was at Coral world In jan. was not impressed after all the hipe I heard of it. Was not worth the price.
Have hubby by you some sparkely stuff. I love to haggle with the shop owners.

From St. john I would take Charlotte Amalie ferry into St. Thomas. You will than be in the shopping area. Lots and lots of stores. Lunch I would go to Virgillo's.
Virgillos is located right in Charlotte Amalie where all the shopping is located. You may want to arrange a guided tour of St. Thomas. There is a hospitality lounge in Emancipation Gardens. They can give you directions and advice.

Within walking distance from the CA ferry...

First, go on a day when there is only 1-3 ships in port. If there are more than that, you'll have to wade through a crowd of cruise-ship-people and you don't get a chance to see the charm in all the alley ways.

Second, definitely walk all the alley ways and shops. There are a billion jewelry and perfume stores but there are also a few local art stores and some fun cafes, some island made soaps etc.

Third, try one of the jewlery shops. In most cases, you will be served drinks, they will drape jewlery on you, they will haggle with you. It's actually really fun! I reccomend Imperial Jewelers.

Fourth, hit a small cafe for lunch. Behind Imperial is a place called Coconuts (I think). Dark, cool, good bar, decent lunch food, usually a nice quiet escape from the craziness that is CA! Gladys Cafe is also very good (just ask one of the hawkers how to get there) and you will be entertained with live singing . We had a late lunch at the Greenhouse at the bar last year and liked it A LOT. But, I've heard that the place can get a little rowdy come sun down.

Fifth, stroll away from the alleys over to the outdoor market (under all the tents). Lots of island trinkets, jewelry, etc. Good stuff cheap!

Sixth, hire someone to take you on an island tour. I've heard it's really fun! And you get to see beautiful STT...beyond the shopping frenzy.

LysaC hit the nail on the head. The only thing I would add while you're shopping is to go into a few liquor stores (AH Riise for example). They usually have someone in front pouring samples to try.

Jersey> true, true, good point. Had a few tips of Cruzan Cream at a sample table. Yum!
