May has always been our favorite month. The villa prices drop to the off-season rates and the waters are starting to warm up to. It is also a nice to treat yourself for making it through another long winter.

Welcome to the forum! You will find tons of information on this forum and lots of people who are always willing to help plan our trip! Since you are a newbie, are you looking to rent a private villa, what are you looking for (pool, a/c, etc.), will you be renting a car? I would highly recommend staying at either Gallows Point or Grande Bay for your first trip. Located right in Cruz Bay so you can walk to all the shops, restaurants, bars but still have the privacy of a condo.

We stayed at Just for Two back in 2002. We rented the upstairs (Tropical Orchid), which had a lovely view from the deck. The owners were helpful and we actually rented a 4 wheel drive vehicle directly from them. We also went out for dinner with them one night and had an enjoyable conversation. The husband has since passed away. Their own house was next door. The hot tub is located on the downstairs level and is shared with the downstairs guests, but we were the only guests there for most of our stay. We watched the cruise ships traveling to/from St. Thomas while sitting in the hot tub. The local roosters woke us quite early most mornings. At that time, there seemed to be a lot of noise from large fans perhaps at the Westin. And the drive to this place was kind of scary for first timers. We did not go out at night because we were afraid to drive home after dark. With the headlights pointing straight up in the air, it was hard to see where we were going. The condo was clean and had what we needed. We breakfasted on the deck with bananaquits.

We stayed at Hillcrest Guest House in 09. We rented the Tropical Garden Suite and our friends were in the Southern Suite. Phyllis who owns the place was super great. She took really good care of us. As a matter of fact, we will be back in there at the end of June. She even let us use her vacuum to get the sand out of the rental jeep before we returned it. She also provides a limited amount of food-mostly breakfast type stuff but hey, every bit helps. We usually only eat out dinners and we pack lunches for the beach. There is a full fridge in the Tropical Garden Suite and often times there is stuff there from the last people like condiments, etc. Because we are so comfortable there, I dont know if we will ever stay elsewhere. There is no pool though, but we spend every day at the beach anyway so that wasnt a big deal for us. Good Luck. If you book with her, tell her Brenda from Colorado referred ya. Shes a doll.

junebug,

Welcome to the Forum and happy planning!

We stayed at Perelandra with another couple a couple of years ago.

It is very well cared for and has amazing views - especially of sunset. We really enjoyed our stay there. It's about 7 minutes out of town and even though it's your first visit, I still think it's a great idea to stay outside of town and rent a jeep. The best way to see St. John is by jeep - just get out there and explore.

Any specific questions, just ask!
