USVI-On-Line

I finally got around to finishing the on line photo album from our trip in late October/early November.

These are mostly generic pictures for "the world" to see, the ones with our forum and on island friends are in a personal album.

Since it wasn't until halfway through the trip that we realized we were shooting in reduced size mode I went ahead and put all of the images here in a 640 X 480 pixels format.

I also loved looking at the pictures--you got some great underwater shots--do you mind my asking, what camera did you use? I need a new camera for our upcoming STJ trip as we will be doing some diving.

All of these pictures were taken with my wife's Canon D10 because, on our first night on island, I dropped my trusty Olympus C5050 on the tile floor at the condo, rendering it (and its underwater housing) useless for the entire trip.

Thanks for sharing and also labeling the sea life pics..I especially loved the pics at Maho with the palm trees..Niccceee.

Thank you for those great underwater shots. I have the same camera. You got a great shot of the porcupine fish---one of my FAVORITES--they are so cute. And the spotted drum!, both at Little Lameshur where I have never been.....Now I will have to get out there. I get really excited when I see the underwater shots and realize there are so many more places to explore. I rarely go to the East end.
Now I've got Haulover No.& Little Lameshur on my short list. Plus I don't think I've given Maho or Francis Bay a chance. I always thought they were best for swimming, not so good for snorkeling.
There's no question, I need a good month in that place!

Nice job auggie you captured most of what makes St John my favorite place on earth. Great shots of the elusive mongoose. Have seen a bunch but never get the shot. Those little buggers don't coooperate for me.

Fantastic pictures! Thank you for sharing. We are going to St. John for the first time in June. Our 11 year old grandson will be going with us and encounter his first snorkeling experience! We are super excited for this upcoming trip. I plan on getting my husband the Canon D10 camera for his birthday in
April. Especially since I saw the quality of your pics!

You displayed names for all the sea creatures/fish you encountered which is awesome. Could you tell me if you know of a book or cheat sheet that shows the different fish, etc. that we could use to determine what it is we are seeing. We could really use something like that since we are novice snorkelers.

I have a three volume, bound "reef set" of ID books by Paul Humann. My wife and I bought these years ago so that when we returned from scuba dives we could share the creatures that we saw with our young boys. It really gave them a leg up on ID'ing fish when they learned to snorkel and dive.

If you don't want to jump in that deep right away, there are waterproof vinyl cards that you can buy in a number of places that ID the most common fish/creatures that you'd likely encounter in VI waters.

St. John Spice may have them, I think the NPS does as well, and probably the watersports operators, too.
