Coral Bay day? Taxi, no car

Hi all,
We'll be staying on STT again this trip with a couple of days on the ferry to STJ. I've read so much about Coral Bay in other folks trip reports.

Would it be worth it for us to taxi or bus to Coral Bay for a day? Can you actually walk around the town and do beaches in the area that a taxi would drop us off in? Where to eat or have a drink (or both)? Where to beach? How long and how much is a taxi vs. a bus?

I think it would be fun to see that area but don't know if we should plan a day around it or not. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

thanks,
Nancy

It is sooooo hard to get a taxi to Coral Bay - I know they are supposed to but I have heard horror stories of cost (they charged my MIL $35 for 2 people one way) and as I sit at the kiosk in Cruz Bay I have had more people ask how to get there as the taxi's won't take them. Now having said that I have read on the forums that some will - I just don't know who.

As far as the bus - oh boy - good luck. Currently it is leaving Cruz Bay at 6am, 8am, 10:20am, 1:20pm, 3:20pm, 5:20pm and 7:20pm (when it is running true to this "new" schedule) cost is $1.00 per person.

The thing with Coral Bay is that if you get off at Skinny's there are 2 shops plus Skinny's, then the next "area" Cocoloba consists of a 2 restaurant's, (Island Blues and Aqua Bistro) grocery store, deli and 2 shops and that is probably 1/2 mile from Skinny's, then probably 1 1/2 miles further you have Shipwreck and 2 stores and then probably 2 miles further Miss Lucy's then 2 miles further Tourist Trap and Saltpond - so you can see Coral Bay is very spread out.

Hope this helps

I definitely love Coral Bay and recommend spending a day exploring it. That being said, without a car there is no way I'd try to do it.

Are there places that will rent a jeep for one day? If so and you are able to afford the cost, I'd definitely rent and go exploring for the day.

Pia gave a great explanation of the distance between "areas"!

Have a wonderful trip!

I will be on the rock in May for 8 days.5 to 6 of those days I will be using a taxi for the north shore. The last 2-3 days,I'm going to rent a jeep. Why?Because I want to visit the East-end/Coral Bay side. It's the best and cheapest way to do it. :D Parafins

You could hitchhike--a bit touch and go, but if you have nothing but time.......

Thanks Pia and everyone for your responses. I kind of thought that would be the answer, I just wasn't sure how doable it would be.

Loria - we'll be there the same time as you. Maybe we'll catch up with you at the Beach Bar or somewhere.

I have rented a car for 3 days from St. John Car Rental. Never reserved ahead but lucked out from the sounds of it from all those who reserve months in advance. Visited the Coral Bay side of the Island those days, otherwise hitched around and took taxis back to Cinnamon Bay.

Wondering....we are staying in Cruz Bay and taxiing to beaches next time, no car rental this time. Will be missing my Shipwreck fix - would it be plausible to catch the bus just to go to Shipwreck if we had a loose schedule? Thanks!
